Evangelical Christian Academy Instructional Guide: Course Outline Department Science Course Title Honors Physics Course Length Two Semesters Unit Title Static Electricity, The Electric Field, Current Electricity, Series and Parallel Circuits, Chapters 21 – 24 Unit Length estimate ~ 20 days Instructional Objectives • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • List the three parts of an atom and describe how electrons are transferred Compare and contrast conductors, insulators, and semiconductors Describe what happens when like and opposite charges interact Explain what charging by conduction and induction means Using Coulomb’s Law, calculate the force one charged body exerts on another charged body depending on how far apart they are located from eachother Determine what causes an electric field and be able to draw electric field lines Calculate electric field intensity Calculate electric potential and compare electric potential energy intensity between like and opposite charges Calculate the potential difference between two points a distance apart in a uniform field of intensity Determine how electrons are shared Describe and be able to calculate capacitance Define electric current List parts of a circuit and describe what they do (battery, capacitor, resistor, etc.) State Ohm’s Law and relate the statement to resistance Draw Electric Circuits Calculate Electric Power Define a kilowatt hour and memorize its value Visually recognize the difference between circuits in series and parallel circuits Calculate voltage, resistance, and current for series circuits and parallel circuits and a combination of the two Describe what an ammeter and voltmeter measures and applications of both devices Instructional Resources • • • • Textbook: Physics Principles & Problems Teacher Resource Masters Physics Principles & Problems Physics Laboratory Teacher Annotated Edition Visuals: o Chapter 21 Teaching Master: Charging by Conduction and Induction, Separation of Charge, Coulomb’s Law, Electrostatic and Gravitational Forces o Chapter 22 Teaching Master: Millikan’s Oil Drop Experiment, Charge Sharing o Chapter 23 Teaching Master: Symbols Used in Electric Current Diagrams, Simple Circuit o Chapter 24 Teaching Master: Series Circuit, Parallel Circuit, Series and Parallel Circuit Biblical Integration • • • • God is the author of science, the creator of all things. Studying His creation allows us to marvel His nature. The rationality of the universe is a gift from God. God has created the universe according to a rational plan. Moreover, He has created man in His image (Genesis 1), so that man is a thinking, conscious, religious being who can discern the mathematical structure placed in the universe by the Creator. For physics to be possible there must be a basic uniformity to nature: the same laws should apply over extended periods of time. Otherwise no predictions are possible. Christianity supplies a basis for such observed regularity: God, in His covenant with Noah after the Flood (Genesis 9), promised the regular flow of times and seasons, until the time comes for a new heaven and a new earth. God did not just create the universe and then leave it to fend for itself; rather, He is continuously upholding His creation. Experts are needed to evaluate and apply the conclusions of scientific research in a Christian manner. Such experts can guide the Christian community in its interaction with modern society.
