Bio 17 – Study Guide for FINAL This study guide should help prepare you for the final exam. This is not a list of everything on the final; you should really look over everything as EVERYTHING is fair game. This study guides is meant to assist you to make sure you understand at least the basic concepts in class. Tim’s Topics: 1) Make sure you understand what the prisoner’s dilemma is and what the tit-for-tat strategy is in relation to the prisoner’s dilemma. Make sure you know the outcomes 2) Reread the article “What’s in your mind”. Make sure you know the parts of the brain, what they do, the neurotransmitters we covered, and how a resting and action potential are generated. Make sure you understand the activity we did about two-point discrimination. 3) Who are the Yomybato and the Yanomamo? Who are the Yanomamo most likely to engage in negative reciprocity with? 4) Why might Pied Wagtails allow satellites onto their territories? 5) How do the following animals migrate: Sea Turtles, Monarch Butterflies, and Indigo Buntings? 6) Make sure understand what reciprocity, kin selection, byproduct mutualism, and group selection are. Make sure you can identify each from an example (either one given in class or a hypothetical one). Explain Hamilton’s rule and the equation! 7) What factors are important in home range size of side-blotched lizards? 8) What affects the migration behavior of: Red-eyed Vireos, European Blackbirds, and Fox Sparrows? 9) What’s the difference between an ultimate and proximate answer or explanation (make sure you can recognize them from an example)? 10) What factors affect the feeding behavior of Starlings, Northwestern Crows, Oyster Catchers. Make sure, for example, if I show you a graph of mate selection based on the relationship scenarios of males and females that you can recognize it. If we showed you a graph of a behavior, you should recognize it and what we used it to describe and what animal it was done on! 14) Make sure you look over your field trip packet from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park!!! What sex should be more involved in parental care according to Trivers? What is the Bateman’s principle? What are the 4 evolutionary stable strategies for parental care? What are the examples of each? Match the type of mating systems with the most likely parental care strategy. What is the parent/offspring conflict? In birds, who usually got fed more? How is this influenced Know the activity with the babies and food. Antipredator/Survival: Know the 3 constraints on adaptive perfection. What is a search image? Know how animals avoid predators (camouflage, cryptic coloration, disruptive coloration, countershading, masquerading, being quiet, and the dilution effect).
