9‐year‐old Haley House, a native of Allegany County, bravely fought brain cancer for almost 2 years – she went to heaven on October 23, 2014 after capturing the heart of this community and beyond The Holding Hands for Haley Foundation has been established with a VISION to provide HOPE to families of children fighting cancer in memory of our hero Haley House MISSION: to raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research and to spiritually and emotionally support families of children who are still fighting Some FACTS about childhood cancer: o Childhood cancer is not rare ‐ 1 in 330 children will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they are 20 years old o In the last 20 years, only 2 cancer medications have been specifically developed for children o 2/3 of childhood cancer survivors will have long‐lasting chronic conditions from treatments that were developed for adults and used on children o Despite these statistics, less than 5% of the federal governments funding for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancer each year Foundation has consulted with Haley’s doctors at Johns Hopkins University to determine how to achieve the greatest impact with funds raised – several specific research organizations have been identified as recipients of Foundation funding Foundation is in process of filing for 501(c)(3) non‐profit status with IRS ‐ we are hopeful to achieve status by end of 2015 so our 2015 donors may receive tax credit Visit our new website at www.holdinghandsforhaleyfoundation.org – sign up for our newsletter to stay tuned to upcoming events and opportunities! September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness month! o Gold is the color representing this cause much like pink represents awareness for breast cancer in October. o We invite all supporters to GO GOLD in September with us! o Why green? Green is Haley’s favorite color. o Why gray? Gray is the color specifically representing brain cancer awareness. However, funds raised by the Foundation are focused on supporting research of any form of pediatric cancer. UPCOMING EVENTS: o September GO GOLD Campaign  A number of local youth and high school sports teams have partnered with the Foundation by purchasing gold socks and gold awareness ribbon headbands that will be worn during September sporting events. Gold awareness ribbon stickers are also available for teams and squads who wish to participate.
