The Sun‟s metallurgical, astronomical and astrological glyph, though very simply comprised of a
circle with a dot in the center, is a complex symbol. The symbol we use for the Sun in our charts
is the same symbol as used for the element Au, or the precious metal, gold. And the gold of the
Sun is the alchemical achievement of a lifetime of work, or as the alchemists called it the “opus.”
Turning our lead to gold, is a solar process, and thus, your Solar Return is a map of that work, or
opus, for the coming year.
As a symbolic archetype, the Sun is not only passive, acting as a lens through which life is
viewed subjectively, but also active, in that the solar principle contains and animates one‟s inner
impulses and unconscious intent and externalizes these psychic motivations, which manifest in
observable behavior patterns. The Sun is the focus of the planetary system, which is beholden to
it for it‟s very existence.
It might be viewed in two ways.
1. The Sun in and of itself – as a pure symbol devoid of any projection on it, untainted and
unpolluted by aspects, zodiacal locus in the horoscope – might be said to represent the
greater Self.

2. The Sun as we see it personalized through the individual horoscope – replete with zodiacal degrees, aspects to other planets and house positions – might be said to be the vehicle
for self-identity, or the lens through which the ego is focused and manifested, changing
and adapting to life‟s circumstances.
The “deeper Self,” according to Jungian psychology, is the psychic impetus to grow and become
more of oneself increasingly as time and experience demand. The Self is the mysterious incentive to continue to develop as many facets as possible of one‟s inherent nature.
The Self comprises the entirety of our being, both conscious and unconscious, containing hidden
or nascent aspects of what we call our personality and “who we are.” Because self-unfoldment
and the integration of parts into a unified whole – the process which Jung called “individuation”
– is unique to each individual, no model exists for that process.
As an apple seed knows it is to be an apple, not an orange, so the seed of Self knows who we are
to become. Naturally, as the tree grows shall the fruit bear – and the proper care and service to
the Self is essential for a strong ego and appropriate personality for the individual person to blossom.
Jung‟s concept of the Self was that it comprised both the center and circumference of our psychic whole. Similarly we see the astrological Sun as a symbol both of Self and Ego, or the whole
of our psyche and its intent.

So, not only does the Sun symbolize the objectively expressed individualistic state, but also the
undifferentiated state of pure will, the fundamental survival instinct. All of this leads to a conclusion:
If the Sun is the hub, the center around which all planets including the Earth revolve, and if we
also see it geocentrically as the definition of the ecliptic, the zodiac, literally the Path of the Sun
in our sky, and as the measurer of all things, then, it is indeed both center and circumference.
The Sun symbolizes reason, mind, intellect, projection and firelight (as opposed to the Moon
which is soul, intuition, reception and womb-dark), all of which combine to establish one‟s sense
of uniqueness and individuality. Solar qualities, unrefined and in the ideal state, are qualities of
undifferentiated power and expression in their most primitive form.
The very word, focus, means “hearth, or hearth-fire” from the classical Latin origin. And, the
Sun is both focus and lens – the focus of our Self through our identity, and the lens through
which we perceive our world from a personal, subjective viewpoint.
Aspects to planets from the Sun qualify, modify and enhance (in some cases obscure and debilitate) solar features, so that solar expression, through the limits of individual and horoscopic definition, is never pure – the sign that the Sun is in is never expressed in its pure form. This is why
experienced astrologers are acutely aware of the limitations of describing an individual through
the Sun sign alone. There may be fundamental archetypal themes, but they are redefined through
the infinitely variable lenses of astrological configuration and personal psychology.
The essence of the zodiac sign and the exact degree, minute and second in which the Sun lies at
birth, is constant and indicates a particular bias. But the fact that the Sun is positioned there (this
applies to any planet) colors the pure experience of the sign and requires that the basic characteristic of the sign be lived out in a manner peculiar to the demands of the solar principle.
The Sun in a sign simply means that one must find ways of self-discovery and self-expression
that conform to the archetype of the sign. American astrologer Jeff Jawer once said to me that he
would probably understand Taurus better if his Sun weren‟t there. This was a perceptive remark
about how we are predisposed to view the world through our own focus, and from deep within
our self.
Solarization of consciousness is the process of separating oneself from the collective identity and
finding methods of expression that are completely one‟s own. This process of differentiating

what is truly one‟s own from that which is acquired, or superimposed on one‟s feeling of core
Selfness, is the process of individuation.
The term means “the business of getting down to the indivisible” or simply stated, becoming
who you are over a lifetime.
Your Solar Return, or the time in which the Sun comes back to its place when you were born is a
renegotiation of your contract with your Self. Your time of Solar Return is a moment in which
your deepest Self makes a new agreement to continue with the process of you becoming you.
Your essential nature and destiny does not change, but the way in which you live it out and explore each year does. And, the horoscope set for that very moment of return gives many hints
and directions that will meet you in the subsequent year.
In this report, we hope to do that – to give you some guidance, a direction and an overview of
what your Sun‟s return presented this past (or next) birthday, and some timing to add to your
own innate wisdom.

THE SUN – THE RADIANT CORE OF BEING
The ball of electromagnetic energy we call the Sun has been the subject of continuous observation
and subsequent scientific discoveries for millennia of years. We know the Sun is approximately 4.5
billion years old and is in a constant state of change. Red giant and white dwarfs describe the
phases of a dying star, which scientists say won‟t begin to happen to our Sun for another 4.5 billion
years. So we have time yet for individual and global improvement to persevere!
We know that life on our home planet, earth is dependant upon the Sun. The Sun is the only selfluminous body in our planetary system and the reason we have Sunshine – radiation – is due in
part to constant nuclear reactions deep with in its core. The Sun‟s relevance in sustaining physical
life is true on a symbolic and archetypal level, as well.
Astronomy tells us our Sun is a typical, and rather ordinary star, as stars go, but cultures from archaic times to our contemporary era worship and sacrilise the Sun as the primary deity – the source
of all life and light. The Sun has always held divine meaning and significance, giving rhythm to
life through its daily rising and setting. In tribal cultures, the rising and setting of the Sun are observed by sacred rituals, drumming, chanting and arcane dancing – all to aid the Sun in its diurnal
motion. The synthesis of magical thinking and critical thinking serve our understanding both of the
astrological and astronomical Sun.
The Sun and its motion in part, creates our calendars; the summer and winter solstices; the spring
and autumn equinoxes and the rhythmic cycles of eclipses of both Sun and moon; and our handy
time zones to simplify global communication is a solar feature! By the mid-eighth century B.C.E.
the Babylonians could accurately predict eclipses and viewed them as portentous events.
Various archaic gods associated with solar myths all represent kings and heroes, slayers of dragons
and treasure seekers, even in ancient Greece where women were not considered heroes, there was
heroic Medea, who was a solar female, directly descended from Helios, her grandfather. The archetypal qualities of the Sun – vitality, life force, courage, confidence, creativity and power – are
inherent in each of us.
Through the studies of cross-cultural myths of countless solar gods, we gather myriad archetypal
qualities of the Sun as they are expressed through archetypal visions. Through the monomythic
four-fold structure – rising, culminating, setting and traversing the dark midnight – the Sun is the
celestial foundation of the Hero‟s Journey.
Your Own Solar Qualities
The Sun in the horoscope embodies both the deep inner Self, as well as the important ego, the psychological “place” in which we carry our Self. Our natal Sun is our fire, our fuel, our radiance and
the character of our being. The Sun‟s natal place is described in your report, as well as its position
in the Solar Return Chart. That the Sun „moves‟ in the course of the year, between one birthday
and the next, you will also see how your Solar Return Sun „moves‟ to open doors to new ways of
using your power, focus and energy to grow and learn in a smooth, evolutionary flow.
It is this elevation of spirit and evolution of each individual‟s nature that gives each person his and
her power of spirit and center of soul. You have your own solar qualities, and your Heroic Journey,

The focal point of the Solar Return is the Sun. The Sun is the center of our planetary system and
symbolizes not only the inner core self, but also the active ego. Contained within the core Self is
the principle of consciousness, the intrinsic nature as the source from which conscious or unconscious impulses radiate, and our very life force. We witness the power of Sun everywhere, as a
source of energy, as the light that allows plants to grow, as heat that warms us on a cold day.
The Sun‟s rays focused through a magnifying glass can start a fire and manifest as tangible energy.
Similarly, the solar principle within us can be harnessed through focus and conscious action and
make ones inner intangible goals, tangible and apparent. The Sun symbolizes the constancy of the
core self, the essence of spirit, and the guiding force in the process of self-development and attaining life‟s goals.
Every year the Sun returns to the exact degree, minute and second of the position it was in when
you were born, bringing annual renewal. This is a significant moment because the earth and Sun
are in the same relationship and the cosmic moment of your birth is revisited, recalling your first
moments of consciousness in the world. You can renegotiate your core purpose in life as it plays
out in the ever-changing circumstances present in your life.
Like the drama of dawn when the Sun bursts above the horizon dispelling the darkness of night,
the Sun‟s annual return brings illumination to your spirit and an awakening of your dynamic inner
principle. Working with awareness you can connect to the deepest parts of yourself, and the qualities of the Sun – vitality, creativity and courage– can be better channeled and manifest in your
world, helping to make the most of your life. Consciousness and purposeful living assist the continuous process of development and unfolding your individuality. Bear in mind that the intent of

WHEN THE SUN RETURNS
Our lives are a continuum of development and growth. Sometimes we find ourselves in fortunate
circumstances, like sailing on a smooth lake on a clear day, while other times it seems as if we
are caught at sea in stormy weather. In either circumstance it is clear that the only certainty in
life is an ongoing state of flux; though patterns may feel similar, nothing is ever the same. While
happier times are preferred, it is adversity that inexorably drives us forward, challenging us to
reflect, grow, change and accommodate the new.
A Solar Return horoscope is equivalent to a natal horoscope but is a chart based on the annual
return of the Sun to the degree, minute and second of arc as it was in your natal horoscope (birth
chart). And, thus, is a map for the moment, as well as the year ahead. As a life-map the Solar
Return not only offers the broad view for a full year, but also it illuminates fine details and contour lines of the evolving landscape – rather like a topographical map.
Your Solar Return advises you on your best direction of travel, so you might find the smoothest
road – and also when you might need to pack your rain gear! Through conscious living we can
work toward our purpose in life most effectively and make better choices. A yearly outlook offers you a conscious way to sail smoothly along in life rather than drifting in choppy seas. In this
way the Solar Return helps map a clearer path to reaching your life‟s goals and aspirations
A Word on Location
A Solar Return chart is set for the moment when the Sun returns to the exact degree, minute, and
second as when you were born. The moment when this celestial event occurs can be any time
within twenty-four hours of your time of birth – on either side – hence your Solar Return chart
will have the same Sun degree as it was at birth but all other planets are in a different degree,
sign and house than at that time.
The chart cast for this precise moment of the Sun‟s return is dependent on the location. Because
the whole world experiences the same “moment” in time synchronously it is only through time
zones and location that we see the Sun in different sectors of the sky! For instance if you live in
New York City, and you want to phone your friend in London, England, you automatically take
into account the fact that London is five hours later than New York.
While you are talking to your friend in London, the planets are in the same degree, minute and
sign, but they are “seen” in a different part of the sky. Again, if you make this phone call at noon
in New York, the Sun is at the highest point in the sky, while in London, it is 5:00 pm, thus it is
setting. For you in New York, the Sun is in the 10th or 9th house at noon, while in London it is
in the 8th or 7th house, getting ready to set in the west.
In astrology, those sectors are “houses” and thus the location in which the Solar Return is set ultimately is the most significant consideration because houses are the realms of individual experience. And, your planets and Solar Return Sun will fall into three different areas of the chart if
you set three different Returns. There are three possibilities for setting a Solar Return based on
location:
1. CURRENT PLACE OF RESIDENCE. The chart set for this location gives information about
how you are living out your purpose in relationship to your living, working, everyday life

in your immediate environment. Especially if you have lived there for more than two
years (a Mars cycle) - or if you have concrete plans for the location.
2. BIRTH LOCATION. If you live in your birthplace, then clearly you have your Solar Return
as a natal experience. It is the purest form of Solar Return, and in doing five consecutive
Solar Returns for the “land of thy nativity,” you will see your natal angles and thus Sun
position return to the same sign and house every fourth return.
3. YOUR LOCATION ON YOUR BIRTHDAY. (For example, if you are away from home for
business or vacation.) Using an ephemeral location rather than where you live or were
born is still experimental. People do calculate the Solar Return this way, and set elaborate
measure to go to a place that “gives you the best chart;” Erin Sullivan and Nancy Booth,
your authors in this report, recommend the place where you are actually living, or the
natal birth location for setting your Solar Return.
HOW TO READ YOUR SOLAR RETURN
This report is intended as a practical guide in showing when and how to take advantage of opportunities that may be presented and seeing potential for development in particular areas of life
or where the potential for difficulties are. Read it in its entirety at the beginning of your solar
year (birthday to birthday), and review it periodically for reference, in gaining insight into arising
situations and life circumstances. The flavor of experiences, bitter or sweet, provide clues to how
our inner concerns, conscious or unconscious, are reflected in outer conditions. Knowing when
key times are likely for changes, can help with planning, decision making and when it may be
beneficial to take action – or not. Current planetary influences operating in the Solar Return will
show years when efforts to move forward in life will pay off or when there are years that are
better spent in consolidating resources and recharging for future plans and growth.
The Big Picture:
In the Big Picture section of your report you have the primary overview of your Solar Return
chart features, and they offer the theme and motif of the coming year. This is like the backdrop
of the stage, where the scene is set against. There are six main foci:
THE PLANETARY PATTERN – shows the shape of your chart and the energetic makeup of
yourself in the next year,
HEMISPHERIC EMPHASIS – shows the area in which you are most likely to play out your
relationship to the world around you.
MODALITY – this is based on a dominance of either Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable signs and shows
the primary way of operating in the world.
HOUSE EMPHASIS – this is based on the Angular, Succedent and Cadent Houses and the emphasis you have in one or another. This is the theme of your individual realms of personal
experience.

chart, and shows your way of being in the world this year.

THE SOLAR RETURN ASCENDANT – where it falls in relation to your natal chart. The house that
“holds” the Solar Return Ascendant sign is a prominent motif all year. It focuses on an inherent
realm of interest or activity in your life, and accents it by concentration of your “self-image;
personality; self projection” in a particular house.

THE PLANETARY PATTERN IN YOUR SOLAR RETURN
The Energetic Makeup of Yourself this Year
Marc Edmund Jones was first to collate and describe planetary patterns as “ways of being.” As
planets orbit, and form patterns and array themselves in the heavens around the Sun, they spontaneously form (and reform) clusters, polarities, splay patterns, tight aspects of a small group of
planets, and so on. Chart patterns are linked to temperament, motivation and how one approaches
life‟s opportunities and trials.
The Solar Return chart is particularly interesting in light of these patterns because every year,
within the same day each year, the Sun is in the same degree, minute and second of your sign,
but all the other planets have arrayed themselves in entirely new places.
The planets weaving a fabric around the focal Sun are symbolic of our ever-changing options
within a fixed and central point of purpose. This elegant dance of planets around the Sun has a
rhythm of harmonies that are explicated in what are called “aspects,” that is the angular relationship that the planets form with each other (and with the Sun and Moon). Similarly, the multiple
patterns of aspects hold energy that manifest in personality, events, circumstances and so on.
So, as you read in the early part of your personalized report, your purpose in life, your core Self,
and your destiny are the same, but how you enact, or live out these functions is presented in a
different way every second of the day, but specifically, in the Solar Return planetary pattern.
The patterns are broad descriptions, they are not absolute, but they give a mood, a tone, a feeling
to the energetic configurations of your year ahead. You would need to consult a professional astrologer for a thorough going over of any horoscope pattern, and its integral parts, the planets.
However, this description of how your motivations and your actions and goals are energized is
pretty good, and it forms the foundation or the underpinnings of your projection from this birthday to the next!
These patterns and the array of planets as they alter their relationships with each other every
year, on your birthday, offers you a “new self” to explore – not only do you get to keep your true
core self, but also, you get to try new ways of using that self!

LOCOMOTIVE PATTERN
Driving Force
This year, the planets in your Solar Return Chart have a
distinctive pattern, as you can see in the diagram. The
planets all form a consecutive “line” one after the other,
and, are “led” by one planet. The formation of planets in
this pattern is a driving force, and depending on what it is
you are working toward, you will find yourself frequently
pressing on in the face of any adversity. The patterns of
the planets in a Solar Return don‟t predict events or actions, but delineate, rather, how you feel or operate in the
general course of the year.
This pattern indicates creative potential and a strong drive both to set and reach goals. You‟ll be
confident of your abilities and with a steady, practical approach you will be able to achieve the
objectives you have set for yourself. If you become overconfident your challenge may be to learn
to realize what your limitations are and integrate them with practical reality.
This pattern could also be called “Steamroller,” thus, do be aware that your impetus and drive are
powerful, and will lead you to success if you are considerate and careful about others who are
working or living with you. You may not be this kind of person by your inner nature, but the
Solar Return chart is the theme for the year – and this way you get to “try out” various ways of
being you. You are not any different, but this year you have the chance to be the go-getter, the
completer of tasks, the one who chugs ahead, with effort and
will, to get to the destination.
This is a creative, self-motivated planetary pattern, and one
which will not only provide the interests but also the manner in

Your Primary Way of Operating in the World This Year
Readiness to take action, adaptability to changing situations, or perseverance in life's course is
represented in the modes of behavior shown by Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable signs.
These sign modalities represent archetypal responses and inclinations you have toward your surroundings, life‟s circumstances and shifting conditions. Because this is the preponderance of the

There are three primary components of a horoscope – they are Planets, Signs and Houses.
Planets represent archetypal agencies, psychological drives, urges and motivations. Planets are
rather like verbs, signifying actions, and are therefore what we do. Signs, however, are the adjectives, that is, signs describe how the planet is going to look, act and how it will do those
things. So, Signs are how we do things.
Houses are where we do those things in whatever fashion we are doing them! The house of a

where you will take dynamic action. Succedent houses show the completion of projects you have

ANGULAR HOUSES
Origins, Family, Relationships and Career
The Angular houses are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth. Each of those houses are linked by a
succession of achievements. First house is yourself and your origins, the fourth is your family,
the seventh is your capacity for relating, and the tenth house is your vocation or career, as an
external expression of your deep inner self.
Dominance of planets in Angular houses mark this year as one in
which your primary interests lie in all of those areas – obviously
at different times and with varying intensity. The Angular houses
are initiatory realms, and they all have to do with beginnings and
origination.
Thus, you may well find yourself deeply interested in your roots,
for example, your place in your family of origins. The very core
of your self and being is also of great preoccupation, and you
may make changes to your appearance, and persona. Your intimate friendships and relationships are also of extreme importance this year, and in those you
need to be honest and direct.
Changes are also highlighted within the home, family or your partnerships. Your most intimate
relationships with friends, lover or partner will call out to you, and in turn, you need to find out
who you are in the context of your “others.” By seeing your own self in the mirror of relationship, the reflection you receive will be enlightening. Because one of the Angular Houses is the
fourth house of family and your own home, your domestic life is a focal point at some time this
year. A new address, a return to your family of origins, or even a turning point in life based on
new starts can occur.
You will feel the urge to initiate changes and begin new projects that are self-defining, and possibly with the motive to leave a legacy of some kind or another! Too, you may come to a juncture in your career or vocation. The position of your Sun in your Solar Return Chart is based not only on the time of day when
your natal Sun‟s degree, minute and second returned in the sky, but also the location for which
you have your Solar Return set. Since the Sun in the sky marks the time of day, so your Solar
Return Sun marks the mood and tone of its place in the chart.
The Solar Return Sun is your re-negotiation of your “purpose” in life, while the acting out of that
fixed or archetypal purpose is extrapolated out into the world in new and growth-orientating
ways. Though you are the same old you in your core essence, your way of being in the world undergoes myriad changes and ways of being presented. Each year, you have an opportunity to see
yourself focused in a new arena of activity.
The realms of experience symbolized by the house in which your Sun is placed point to specific
areas in which issues and involvements create focus and enrichment. The affairs of the house are
brought into focus over the course of the entire Solar Return Year (from birthday to birthday),
and highlight the concerns of that house.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know
The Sun in the third house has myriad interpretations and embodies many basic concepts – indeed, so
many that even that is a meaning for this house. Everyday life takes on a program of its own, and your
mind may function at an accelerated pace too! Much of your mundane activity may revolve around
communications and handling details for and with friends, neighbors and siblings.
The urge to keep moving, to keep exploring and learn new
things is strong, and therefore, take time to put these in your
planner. Opportunities for short trips either for business or
vacation arise, giving you a sense of fun and freedom. Our
first “trip” is usually on unsteady legs, outside the front door,
when we were just learning to walk. From that moment on,
your wiring for movement, action and stimulation is set. How
you were encouraged to learn, experiment and think for yourself began way back then. You may revisit this time in your
life, especially if you have fears about new starts or taking
minor risks.
This is a good Sun position for basic mental pursuits such as
studying new things, taking courses and hobby-related activities. Your mind is more inquisitive and receptive to stimulation, thus you likely want to learn and absorb as much knowledge and information as you can. Because
of this mental restlessness, it is an excellent period for educational pursuits through formal classes or
self-directed learning.
It is be important to have an outlet for sharing thoughts and new ideas with others because that stimulation leads to new perspectives. Your views of life and the universe and everything are pretty basic right
now, and you need to feel “amateur” or new to something. So, workshops, reading groups, literary interests, and so on will enhance this phase for you.
The more wasteful aspect of this position is the strong possibility that life is so cluttered with diversion
and options that your thinking becomes scattered. This results in restlessness, so, ideally, if you are in
an explosion of ideas, energy and concepts, but are too excited to

Your Solar Return Ascendant as it falls into a House in your Natal Chart
Each of the twelve houses in your natal birth chart represents unique areas of life and specific
kinds of activity and experiences related to that sphere of life.
Each house symbolizes and depicts a core theme, which in turn, is extrapolated out into myriad
ways that theme is played out in your daily life. For instance, the first house is you, your self and
how you both receive and approach the world; this archetypal foundation underlies how you
dress, how you act at parties, how other people view you in your various spheres of life such as
at work, at home, in play and so on. The origin of these activities lies in the “reception” you received at birth, and how you responded to your environment at birth. Thus, it relates to what you
identify with and take “personally.” Upon that foundation at birth, your development of personality originates.
Your natal houses are fixed, but because the Solar Return chart changes each year, it presents a
new Ascendant, or rising sign – and, if you always have your Solar Return done for where you

My Self Worth is my Greatest Resource
With the Solar Return Ascendant falling into your
natal second house, the underlying intent of this year
points to your sense of self-worth and your innate
values. From the earliest moment of your life, your
inner sense of being loved and valued was in formation. There are also predisposed attitudes that come
with us as we are born, and the second house shows
what we are inclined to value and think of ourselves.
The earliest years of your life contain “body memories” of how you were handled, cared for and valued
by parents and siblings. This year you may find that
you recollect early memories of your “training” as a
person of worth and value. If there are complexes or
difficulties in your own concept of yourself, then
this is the opportunity to rewrite some of that script.
The Solar Return Ascendant is pointing at your deepest core values this year. Thus, the underlying theme for the year has to do with what you truly think things are worth, whether those resources are time, love, money or yourself! You may honestly know and realize that you are a terrific person, but find that your resources do not reflect your true worth. This is not uncommon,
and there are ways to correct the imbalance if there is one, so seek them out.

Another consideration of the second house is your sense of personal security – the money issue
we touched on, but your deep, inherent feelings about your safety, security, self-certainty are
something more easily accessible to you this year. By seeking your deepest inner Self, you will
find yourself.
Trusting in your instinct, your gut/visceral responses to all aspects of your experiences, such as
meeting new people – what do you feel about this or that person? Not what did your mother tell
you to do to be polite to this or that person. But, your gut, your viscera know what you yourself
feel about persons, situations and circumstances.
By going into your instincts and truly connecting with your “body” as value assessor, you will be
able to settle the argument that always exists between the intellect and its received knowledge,
and your body/soul and its instinctual wisdom.

The method we are using for determining dates in the following section is a derivation of a technique called The Wynne Key Cycle, and adapted specifically for this Solar Return report.
The Angles in the Horoscope
The Angles of a horoscope are the only “real” house cusps, because they are astronomical realities,
and are based upon the horizon and the meridians of the location of the birth chart.
The Angles form a cross, the center of which is “you” or your location on earth at the time of birth,
and extend outward into space, and intersect a place along the ecliptic, or a degree in the zodiac.
So, if you are, say, 10 of Libra rising, this means that when you were born, we extended the eastern horizon point (where the Sun would normally rise each day) out into space infinitely, where it
intersected the zodiac at that place along the ecliptic – at 10 Libra!
Simply stated, the horizon – Ascendant/Descendant axis – lies across the horoscope, and the
Meridian, or what we call MC/IC axis runs up and down, forming the Cross of Life or Incarnation.
In the southern hemisphere we look to the North for the Sun‟s path, and in the northern hemisphere
we look due south for the Sun‟s path. In Europe, you wouldn‟t want a sunroom facing east, but
south, to get the “southern exposure.” In Melbourne you put your sunroom to get the “northern exposure” for sunlight!
Now, these angles “change;” that is, as the earth turns “down” toward the east, the heavens “rise”
up, so the Sun isn‟t actually rising, it is just apparently rising, as our earth turns on its axis. In the
course of twenty-four house, a full rotation of the earth produces a full set of 360 of all the signs
rising, and also, at the Midheaven, or MC. (Short for median coeli; as the IC is short for the immum
coeli.)
The Angles of the horoscope are the fastest
changing points and as such, they mark a
very significant period when an Angle is
directed in the Solar Return chart and it
conjoins one of the four Angles of your
natal chart. (One degree of arc crosses over
the MC every four minutes of time.) This is
the same timing for a Solar Return directed
angle moving to conjoin one of your natal
or Solar Return planets, as well.
The technique for this Key cycle, or what is
called the “Directed Angles,” is based on
the fact that in the course of one full year,
from one Solar Return to the next, the angles move only about one-quarter of the
zodiac – returning to the same place every
fourth year. By relocating a Solar Return

chart to where you reside, if you do not live in the place of your birth, changes this returning
pattern, but it does not change the Key cycle. So, our interpretations are based on the quarterly
movement of the Angles, as they are in your Solar Return which is set for your chosen location.
So, what does that mean?
The Angles represent your “hour,” your life
as it is directed outward to the world, as
you receive the world to you, as you are
grounded or located in life, and your goals
and aspirations for this life.
The Ascendant is the literal “horoscope”
from the Greek horoscopos meaning “a
look at the hour,” and announces your birth
and subsequent growth in self and personality. Found on the eastern horizon.
The Descendant, its opposite place to your
Ascendant, represents the types of people
you attract and are attracted to you – based
on your Self and your own persona. Found
on the western horizon.
The IC, the immum coeli, is your family of origins, your home, your base of security and operations. Found at the “bottom” or midnight zone in the chart.
The MC, median coeli, the opposite place from the MC, is your upward reach, into the world, to
society, to your aspirations and goals. Found at the “top” of your chart, in the noon zone.
When these angles are directed in your Solar Return, and contact a planet or another angle, you are
moving into and through a short phase which “points” at a place in your Solar Return or Natal
Chart (planet/angle) at which you are “at work” or highlighting during that phase.
The Directed Solar Return Angles
The dates and readings here are for the year; it is another “backdrop” to your Solar Return theme.
The Solar Return Sun‟s House is also a potent theme – you will find many interactive tones,
moods, and motifs that flow throughout your personal report, and all feed into each other.
In this section, one or more of the Solar Return Angles are directing to one or more of your own
Natal Chart Angles, Natal Chart Planets, and Solar Return Planets – throughout the year. There
may be months showing many dates which indicate particularly active periods but, months with
few dates don‟t mean that you have nothing happening!
We are always in transition from moment to moment, whether we are aware of it or not. Each moment in time embodies all aspects of time, that is, NOW is both made up of the past and the yet
unlived future. So, if you have only a couple of these contacts over a month or more, it certainly
doesn‟t mean you are out of touch! In fact, it is somewhat less arduous and demanding when you

have only a few of these directed angles focusing in your natal chart. There are more “new beginnings” and less rumination on the past.
Too, you have many things concurrently in action in your natal horoscope at all times, hence your
busy life. There are myriad astrological measurements, that define your structure, life cycles, timing and goals – and the Solar Return is but one of those.
In the forecast that follows, you‟ll encounter three types of Directed Solar Return Angles:
1. Solar Return Angles Directed to Natal Chart Angles
2. Solar Return Angles Directed to Visible (Inner) Planets (Natal & Solar Return)
3. Solar Return Angles Directed to Outermost Planets (Natal & Solar Return)
A Note about Solar Return Angles directed to the outermost planets
When one of your four Solar Return Angles directs toward and conjoins (“points at”)
one of the three outer planets, there is an element of the collective ethos involved in any
of your endeavors. The three planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are planets that are not visible
to the naked eye, are outside the boundary of Saturn, and have proven to be both personal and
collective agents.
That is, the descriptions for your month or so of Solar Return directed angle to outer planet, may
have influence in your life that is beyond your individual control. When big things happen to our
world or our culture, such as influences by the stock market, wars, natural disasters, major scientific breakthroughs, the discovery of new natural elements or a planet, or revolutionary medical
treatments – all these are the type of “collective” experiences to which we refer.
For instance, if you worked for a major corporation, and that corporation was affected by a collective disaster, and you lost your job, this would not be your individual fault. You did not have a
choice. When our collective in which we are directly implicated, but not necessarily capable of
reforming, theorizing on or psychologically controlling, then we are involved with a much bigger
Fate than our own.
What you do with that experience is your choice, and there are ways of working with such impossible situations that are part of your individuation, your ongoing process of becoming.
Hence, the delineations need to account for Fate and for things beyond your individual sphere.
Many times these are awakenings to humanitarian and collective causes, such as environmental
issues, legal aid, prison reform, mental illness awareness, teen support groups, animal protection,
care giving, the elders of our world, hospice work, ecology – human and natural; and so on.
Working on behalf of the collective is something that each of us as individuals can do, and in
that way improve the overall, collective consciousness of our global village. In these times of
epochal transition, we all have something to offer, and if you will, owe a debt to the collective.

The Solar Return Sun’s Directed House Position
The position of your Sun in your Solar Return Chart is based not only on the time of
day when your natal Sun‟s degree, minute and second returned in the sky, but also the
location for which you have your Solar Return set. Since the Sun in the sky marks the time of
day, so your Solar Return Sun marks the mood and tone of its place in the chart. If you are having your Solar Return set for your birth location, then that is where your actual natal Sun is repeated by hours. Same if you have your Solar Return set for your current home place, it will fall

Saturn and the IC combine to bring a sense of family history to the fore. You may not have had

Rather than dwelling on the darker side of your family history and myths, do a bit of digging.
The information you root out with exploring your genealogy will give you a sense of truly belonging to the human family, and may put rest to old ghosts. You may actually have an increased

The structure and foundation of the home itself is highlighted, and you may find yourself literally

When the Sun is in the second house, it is focusing on all aspects of your self worth and self esteem. For instance, do you think you are only worth what your bank account and physical assets
amount to? Do you feel unworthy at critical times of decision-making? Are you reasonably comfortable in your body? These are the kinds of considerations and issues that are highlighted when
the Sun shines in this house.
Keeping in mind that our deepest and most instinctual responses to an inner sense of personal worth and value are
so often reflected in our world of comfort and living,
you‟ll find yourself returning repeatedly to this motif.
This is an indication that now is the time for a good
evaluation of just what you are worth. Because this is a
house which embodies our earliest memories on the sensory level, you learned many things about yourself before
you could even think. This preverbal state of “mind” is

There is potential for a good bit of activity at home and with your private affairs during this period. Your attention may be turned to property concerns or home improvement, such as redecorating, remodeling, or construction projects. Another area of focus may be on establishing a
sense of security and a more independent lifestyle and this will be a good time to work toward
that end. It is not uncommon with Mars in this position to have a few conflicts with your family
or among housemates.
You may feel the need take action and get things accomplished now but take care not to make
hasty decisions or take rash action for the sake of advancing. Irritability can be a problem if you

The combination of Mars and Ascendant lend a force and drive to your identity and personality.
This is excellent, but it does mean tempering your approach and fervor so not to engulf all and
sundry in your path. If you have a strong incentive to achieve, then now is the time when the
elements conspire on your behalf. Go forth and conquer.
It is an ideal time to initiate action and forward motion. Rather than overwhelming the world
with your passion and force, be strong, stable and show your endurance. Mars is a troublemaker
at the best of times, but very necessary at the worst of times. Mars is about self-definition and
drawing boundaries – and thus, this is a perfect time to measure your energy outgo against the
results you achieve. If you are pushing the river, or trying to move mountains and nothing is
budging, then stop. Assess the degree to which you really want to get things done, and let go of

This period can bring about changes in your career or life direction and may also precipitate
changes in your home and family life as a result. Shifting circumstances may include changes in

Interior Reflection
If ever you have desired a time to pull in, pull back from the hurly burly, it has now arrived. This
does not negate a social life nor active relationships. The idea of an inner life, or an interior reflection is not adverse to being busy and involved. This Solar Return Sun placement highlights
your deepest, most hidden self – your psyche. This is the playground of the soul. In this time
your dreams, your feelings about the symbolic aspects of life, your metaphysical “self” and soulful needs are taking precedent.
The primary things to avoid are self pity and thinking only of
your own little self. This sojourn here is a time to contemplate the fact that we are all one – truly, we are all interconnected and thus form a collective consciousness and unconscious. By improving yourself, you are improving the world
consciousness by that much! That may be the extent to which
you can influence the world-mind, but that is a huge contribution.
Reflection and meditative habits are the stuff of creative
minds. This is an excellent period for writing, journal keeping, psychoanalysis, reflecting on the great mysteries of the

It is important that you care properly for yourself now, and maintain your mind/body balance.
This is the house of the soul, and if you are a person who is robust and very physical, you may
not be inclined to attend to the “inner health.” Taking time for contemplative and creative occupations is restorative and stress reducing. You do not have to join a cult to become more in tune
with your inner self – and thus, more in command of your life and outer world. Ideally, you
should avoid drugs, alcohol in excess, as they are passive self-undoing tools in this phase. Selfmedicating devices don‟t work positively during a twelfth house phase. If you are sad – talk, if

Ultimate Self-Control
Pluto is many things in astrological symbolism, but to draw on ancient myth, he is the Lord of
the Underworld. This is not a creepy place, nor is it all about doom and gloom. As a planet it is,
however, a tremendously existential influence. By that we mean the Big Questions are only answered in the realm of Pluto.
Psychologically, we view Pluto – Hades in his original Greek name – as the realm of the great
unconscious. His Greek name means “the unseen one.” In other words, realm of Pluto/Hades is
the component of our psyche that houses everything of which we are not conscious, but that
contributes to our wholeness. This is the locus of our shadow, our dream life, our anima/animus
archetypes and all archetypes, as well as the personal and collective unconscious. Most importantly, the realm of Pluto houses the endless fount of our deepest Self – the aspect of our psyche
which “knows who we are becoming” as we grow and mature.

When a Solar Return Directed angle is conjoined to Pluto, there are myriad possibilities, but the
underlying theme is to come to grips with the inevitable. Whether that is Death (the extreme) or
your Tax Return (almost as extreme).
Pluto is the agent for coming to terms (or not) with things over which we have no control. The
function of Pluto is to force one to face something which requires our deepest survival instincts
and our most useful resources to work with. Primarily, people report two things:
1. Exceptionally deep and obsessive feelings which can be painful or intolerable or both.
And, after that they experience,
2. A sense of being cleansed and empowered beyond their wildest imagination.
So, Pluto is our “greening,” it prepares us for a time in which we will have the most profoundly
influential experiences in our life. Since this is a short phase, and is not a transit, nor a progression, it has the relief of being short and swift, but not shallow, not by any means.
Since this is a Solar Return directed Ascendant to Pluto, your appearance and aspect will alter,
even just for the duration of this phase. People will remark that you look different somehow. You
are undergoing a profound metamorphosis deep within yourself, and it is radiating outward,
through your personality, physical appearance and “aura” or “vibe.” The tendency is to appear to

healing. You may even experience supernatural visitations, or dreams that are profoundly archetypal, what are called “turning point dreams.”
Your unconscious is in constant interaction with you and you will only know this by your results
and by inadvertent exchanges with others. Your emotional intensity now is overpowering, and
this is okay too, especially if you have work to do that requires charisma, coercion or collaboration.
On the darker side, is also possible that you meet with others who try to control or manipulate
you, and this can also be a rather intense time in relationships when both of you are battling for
ascendancy. Challenges can come about on many levels, but this is a significant time when you
can make progress toward increased self-awareness. Subconscious impulses may surface now

E
rin Sullivan’s thirty-something years of astrology
practice, her Classical Studies background and training in
archetypal analytic psychology add a unique depth and
breadth to her work. She has an international clientele, and
appointments for consultations – by telephone or in person – can
be arranged by emailing her or by phone.
Using myth, psychology and the rich language of astrology to enhance
self-understanding, her focus and skills lie in working with people in
all stages of transition and critical turning points.
Living and practicing in London from 1988-98, she tutored for the
Centre for Psychological Astrology and was the Series Editor for
Arkana‟s prestigious „Contemporary Astrology Series.‟
She has edited and published many top authors, and now does so ad
hoc for specialist houses and authors.
She is a trainer in the practice of contemporary and psychological astrology through a mentor-program
created for advanced astrologers and students.

ancy Booth has been in the
study of astrology since the early
1970's, being primarily self
taught but widely read. She has studied
with Erin Sullivan through her books and
fulfilled the Southwest Studies in Contemporary Astrology seminar series in
2000.
Most notable in Nancy's own work is the
originality of ideas that have sprung from
her fascination with timing and predictive
technique. Using various methods that
move the Solar Return chart according to
its „natural‟ astronomical timing, she has
incorporated most of the predictive techniques of Contemporary Astrology.
Through working with clients in her practice over the years, she developed a tried
and true method working with Solar Return charts in conjunction with progressions, solar arc directions and transits.
The result of her work in many of the
techniques and prognostication work, are
applied here in this report.
Nancy lives in New Mexico, and has a full time practice in consulting astrology, after having
spent twenty some years in health care and in the emergency medical field.
Her 30-year study of the Buddha Dharma has fortified her with a deeper perspective on astrology
than she would otherwise have had.
