Many social changes took place during the early twentieth century. ( Prohibition, Migration ) was imposed by
a(an) ( constitutional amendment, act of Congress ) that made it illegal to manufacture, transport, and sell alcoholic
beverages. Many people were opposed to the ban and they went to ( tenements, speakeasies ) to drink alcoholic beverages in secret. Also people called ( bootleggers, prohibitionists ) smuggled illegal alcohol into cities and towns
across the country. As a result organized ( crime, labor ) developed in parts of the country.
Another major movement of the time was the Great ( Prohibition, Migration ) of many African Americans into
the ( western, northern ) part of the United States. Jobs for African Americans in the South were ( scarce, plentiful )
and ( high, low ) paying. Also they faced ( discrimination, integration ) in the South, often resulting in violence. African Americans began to move to northern ( cities, suburbs ) in search of ( employment, housing ) opportunities.
They were surprised and disappointed to find that in the North they also faced ( integration and cooperation, discrimination and violence ).
