Civil Rights Movement
• The African Civil Rights Movement refers to the
movement in the United States aiming to outlaw
racial discrimination and involuntary servitude.
• During the Civil Rights Movement their wasn’t
just one major figure, figures like Martin Luther
King Jr, Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X were of such
prominence.
• During the Civil Rights Movement boycotts,
marches, and many protests were taken into
action in order to proceed with the inception of
African American Rights
Hardwork Pays Off
 Legislative advances were incepted during the Civil
Rights Movement such as Civil Rights Act of 1964 that
banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, and
national origin in jobs and public places.
 Another milestone achieved during the movement was
the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which restored and
protected voting rights. Additionally, Fair Housing Act of
1968 banned discrimination in the sale or rental of a
housing complex.
 After all these main achievements African Americans reentered Southern politics, and after that young people
everywhere were inspired to take action.
Chicano Movement
 The Chicano Movement was a time period when large groups of




diverse Hispanic groups attempted to achieve Mexican American
empowerment.
Cesar Chavez was a Mexican American farm worker who organized
a worldwide union established in California advocate for Spanish
American farm workers.
Latino’s in the United States demanded greater representation and
better overall treatment as people. Latino’s also wanted to be seen
as people of equal opportunity as well as respect.
Chavez launched a nationwide boycott on grape companies in
California.
To achieve his goal he used non-violence and convinced shoppers to
stop buying grapes and deepen their understanding of their cause,
or in Spanish terms, “La Causa”.
