Sexual Development
• Puberty:
–period of rapid growth and sexual maturation
–reproductive system becomes fully functional.
–at end, reproductive organs are fully
developed.
–onset is usually between the ages of 9 and 15
–usually starts one year earlier in females than
in males.
Sexual Reproduction
•The Reproductive system
–produces, stores, and releases
specialized sex cells (gametes).
–the fusion of sperm and egg
forms a “zygote”.
Zygote: the single cell from which
all cells of the human body
develop

What is the menstrual cycle?
1. developed egg is released from an ovary.
2. lining of uterus thickens and prepares to receive an egg.
3. If egg is fertilized it is implanted in the uterus and begins
growing into an embryo.
4. If the egg is not fertilized, the entire uterine lining is discharged
(shed)
• Controlled by feedback loops & takes an average of 28 days.

The Menstrual Cycle
*Most females menstruate during the first 3-7 days of the cycle.
The Menstrual Cycle
Regulated by hormones. A spike in the levels of
each hormone released regulates a specific action
in the cycle.
Ovulation
FSH: stimulates the growth of
ovarian follicles in the ovary before
the release of an egg
Estrogen: stimulates the growth of
the uterine lining
LH: stimulates ovulation
Progesterone: Prepares uterine
lining in anticipation of fertilization.
If the egg is not fertilized the lining
will be shed.
