ECG and Peripheral Circulation Before and After Exercise
Based on the iWorx Exercise HH-3
Background
The goal of this exercise is to measure and compare cardiac and circulatory parameters
before and after exercise. Cardiac parameters involve different ECG intervals, as well as
the R-wave amplitude (expressing the force of ventricular contraction) and the heart
rate. Circulatory parameters include the R-pulse interval (reflecting the speed by which
the pulse wave travels) and the pulse wave amplitude.
Outline of the exercise
Students will record ECG data (via the ECG cable and 3 electrodes) and pulse data (using
the pulse pletysmograph) from a healthy volunteer. Detailed instructions as to how to
connect to the IWX214 power supply can be found in the iWorx handout.
The software used is Labscribe. Below you can see the screenshot corresponding to the
“Main window” of the program, where data collection takes place.
Data will be collected in 3 channels, from top to bottom: ECG, Pulse, and pulse integral.
Three recordings will be made:
1. Before exercise
2. After 3 min “leg exercise” (running etc- it is important to get the heart rate up)
3. After 3 min hand exercise (with a dynamometer).
IMPORTANT: After exercise, keep recording until the subject’s HR and breathing return
to normal. Make a mark on the recording by hitting Enter every 30 secs.

Save your recordings on the desktop with your name/group name. If you are asked to
provide a copy of the recording, from “File” use the “Export” option and save your
recording as a jpeg file.
The subject needs to exercise with the cables/electrodes on so it takes minimal time
between exercise and data collection.
To start recording, click on the RECORD button.
Analysis of data
After the recordings have been made and saved, parameters will be calculated. For that,
students should click on the “Analysis” icon on the top menu.
For a better viewing of the recordings, students can use the Autoscale and Half
time/Double time display buttons.
In the analysis window, parameters will be calculated placing cursors on designed parts
of the recording and reading the corresponding values.
For instance, intervals will be usually measured by placing cursors at the beginning and
end of the interval (wave), and reading the T2-T1 value corresponding to the
appropriate channel. For amplitudes, one cursor is placed on the baseline before the
beginning of a wave, and the other at the peak; reading the V2-V1 value.
• The R-wave amplitude. To measure the R wave amplitude, place one cursor on the Q
wave that precedes the R wave and the second cursor on the peak of the R wave. The
value for V2-V1 on the ECG channel is this amplitude. Measure the amplitudes of two
additional R waves.
• The beat period, which is the time interval between two adjacent R waves (Figure HH3-6 on page HH-3-4). To measure the beat period, place one cursor on the peak of a R
wave and the second cursor on the peak of the adjacent R wave. The value for T2-T1 on
the ECG channel is the beat period. Measure the beat period for two additional pairs of
R waves.
• The P-R interval. To measure this time interval, place one cursor at the beginning of
the P wave and the second cursor at the beginning of the QRS complex. The value for
T2-T1 on the ECG channel is the P-R interval. Measure this time interval for two
additional ECG cycles.
• The Q-T interval. To measure this time interval, place one cursor at the beginning of
the QRS complex and the second cursor at end of the T wave. The value for T2-T1 on the

ECG channel is the Q-T interval. Measure this time interval for two additional ECG
cycles.
• The T-P interval. To measure this time interval, place one cursor at the end of the T
wave and the second cursor at the beginning of the P wave. The value for T2-T1 on the
ECG channel is the T-P interval. Measure this time interval for two additional ECG cycles.
• The R-Pulse interval, which is the time interval between the peak of the R wave and
the peak of the pulse wave that follows the R wave (Figure HH-3-6 on page HH-3-4). To
measure this interval, place one cursor on the peak of a R wave and the second cursor
on the peak of the pulse wave to its right. The value for T2-T1 on any channel is this
interval. Measure this interval for two additional ECG/Pulse cycles.
• The Pulse wave amplitude. To measure the pulse wave amplitude, place one cursor
on the baseline that precedes the pulse wave and the second cursor on the peak of the
pulse wave (Figure HH-3-7 on page HH-3-5). The value for V2-V1 on the Pulse channel is
this amplitude. Measure this amplitude for two additional pulse waves.
Parameters to be calculated for all three recordings:
1. The average R-wave amplitude.
2. The average beat period, in seconds/beat.
3. The heart rate, which is expressed in beats per minute and calculated from the
average beat period by using the following equation:
Heart Rate (beats/minute) = 60 seconds/minute # seconds/beat
4. The average P-R interval.
5. The average Q-T interval.
6. The average T-P interval.
7. The average R-Pulse interval.
8. The average pulse wave amplitude.
