Amniotic Membrane Transplantation Amniotic membrane tissue (AMT) is obtained from the placenta of women who have given birth via Caesarean section, and is available commercially for use in the management of a variety of ocular disorders. AMT is used primarily as a substitute for conjunctival tissue following removal of pterygia and conjunctival tumors, as well as in the management of non-healing defects in the surface layer of the cornea, the corneal epithelium. Amniotic membrane transplantation has also been demonstrated to be useful in the treatment of ocular discomfort associated with swelling of the corneal epithelium. Recurrent lesion covering the cornea (left). One month following removal of the lesion and the application of amniotic membrane tissue to the site of excision, the eye is non-inflamed and comfortable.
