Schoolwide Curriculum
INTRODUCTION:
The Dominican International School Kaohsiung follows the principless and values of
Catholic education through a modified American curriculum. This curriculum guide focuses
on our commitment to incorporate curriculum standards into each and every classroom. The
1
guide is divided into four areas: Pre-K - K1, K2 - Grade 2, Grade 3 - 5, and Grade 6 -8. The
purpose for this is to show how the scope and sequence of the major courses build upon
and spiral into the curriculum of the higher grades.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS:
Kindergarten: Pre-K, K1, K2
★ Elementary: Grades 1 - 5
★ Middle School: Grades 6 - 8
★
Major Core Subjects:
Mathematics, English Language Arts/Writing, Reading/Phonics, Science, Social Studies
Specialty and Elective Subjects:
Christian Living, Health/PE, Chinese Language, Technology, Art, Music, Journalism, Drama, Spanish
CURRICULUM STANDARDS FOR MAJOR CORE SUBJECTS:
CCSS - Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts
Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts
(ELA). These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each
grade. The standards were created to ensure that students graduate from high school with the skills
and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live.
http://www.corestandards.org/
NGSS - Next Generation Science Standards
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are K–12 science content standards. Standards set
the expectations for what students should know and be able to do. The NGSS were developed by
states to improve science education for all students.
http://www.nextgenscience.org/
NCSS - National Council of the Social Studies
The NCSS curriculum standards provide a framework for professional deliberation and planning about
what should occur in a social studies program in grades pre-K through 12. The framework provides
ten themes that represent a way of organizing knowledge about the human experience in the world.

Schoolwide Curriculum
DISK uses several series of textbooks, such as Go Math, Science Fusion, and Journeys
(Reading Program) to “spiral” the knowledge throughout the years in our school. This means
concepts will be revised and will become more complex over time. Students become familiar
with the textbooks and can easily progress as topics become more challenging and grade
2
appropriate.
priate. Example: In K1 the student will learn what a sentence is,, and by grade 8 they
can write complex/compound sentences with correct grammar.
What is a “Spiral Curriculum?”
'Spiral curriculum' can be defined as a course of study in which students wil
willl see the same
topics throughout their school career, with each encounter increasing in complexity and
reinforcing previous learning.. Because it is hard to understand what spiral curriculum is just
by looking at the definition above, this will show what it looks like in practice in two major
subject areas: math and reading.
Mathematics
Spiral curriculum is probably most easily seen in mathematics because most topics in math
build off of each other with increasing complexity. For example, in first grade and the
beginning of second grade, students learn simple addition and subtraction facts. These facts
are memorized by students so that they no longer have to rely on counting on fingers or
using number lines. Addition and subtraction is then made more comp
complex
lex by introducing two
digit numbers.
Reading
Students learn to read in the early years of elementary school. The focus of a reading
curriculum in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade is usually teaching students the
skills they need to independently and successfully read a text. After students are taught to
read, they are then asked to read to learn new things in higher grades like reading for
comprehension, finding the author’s purpose, or defining the mood or tone of a story.

Grade Pre- K:
Brief Overview of Major Concepts and Activities:
Children in the Pre-K program explore many concepts and will be encouraged to master them before
entering K1. Children learn these concepts at their own pace. Children are taught with hands-on
materials, songs, and games. They are assessed by observation and work samples. The skills are to
be addressed and supported throughout the school year for preparation and advancement to the K1
level.

The K1 program at DISK is a link between the higher and lower levels of the program. The students
in K1 are required to become more independent in action and in creativity. They be given more
freedom and will be introduced to a more scheduled approach to classroom settings. The year will
progress with more structure and should better prepare the students for the K2 class setting.
