Lesson 1










A culture is a way of life for different peoples.
Diffusion is a way for cultures to interact.
Assimilation occurs when one culture envelops another.
A political system is a form of government.
Economics is a system that is used to produce goods and services.
The Gross National Product is the total value of goods and services for a period of time.
We have a global environment that consists of different landforms, vegetation and bodies of
water.
Societies become more diverse as culture groups have increased contact with one another.
Many of the cultures today are impacted by the history of the region where they live.
The world can be divided into regions based on geography.
Lesson 2










The most common language of South America is Spanish.
Inca is an ancient civilization of Latin America.
An encomienda is an area of land over which a Spanish colonist demanded labor and taxes
from natives.
Latin America is home to the second highest mountains in the world, the Andes.
Latin Americans have more of mixed heritage than any other region of the world.
In Barbados, Belize and Jamaica, English is the spoken language.
Latin America is a patriarchal society.
In Martinique and Guadeloupe, French is the spoken language.
In Curacao and Aruba, one would hear Dutch spoken.
The science of mathematics was developed by the Maya.

Africa is the most diverse continent with over two thousand ethnic or cultural groups.The
African griot or storyteller is an important member of African cultural groups.
The Middle East and Africa also are known for the earliest civilizations of mankind.
Many people in the Middle East and Africa are rural farmers.
The major natural resource of the Middle East is oil.

Monsoons bring rain to Asia.
The cast system is an Indian tradition which ranks a person by occupation and heredity.
Asia is the largest continent.
China is the world’s third largest and most populated country.
Confucius stressed peace and harmony, too, and based the five relationships of life on moral
ideals.
China faced a Cultural Revolution in the 1960s as protests against Mao Zedong’s domestic
and foreign policies strengthened.
The most important boost to the Chinese economy has come from its move toward
capitalism.
South Korea produces automobiles along with shoes and steel for export.
North Korea produces more heavy industrial products and petrochemicals from its mineral
resources.
