INSTRUCTION FOR COLONOSCOPY Nulytely/Trilyte/Golytely/PEG (SPLIT DOSING) ONE (1) WEEK BEFORE THE COLONOSCOPY: 1. STOP iron pills, vitamins and herbs. AVOID seeds and fibers (berries, multi grain bread, popcorn) 2. STOP ALL medications that thin the blood (coumadin or warfarin, plavix, effient) 1 week before your colonoscopy. Call your primary doctor or cardiologist. You do not need to stop baby aspirin. 3. OBTAIN Nulytely/Trilytely/Golytely/PEG from your pharmacy ONE (1) DAY BEFORE THE COLONOSCOPY: 1. REDUCE your diabetic medication dose to half and monitor your blood glucose level as needed. 2. MORNING: You will be on a CLEAR LIQUID DIET FOR THE ENTIRE DAY. Do not fast or starve yourself. Do not eat any solid food for a full 24 hours prior to your colonoscopy. For a full 24 hours prior to the colonoscopy, you must be on a clear liquid diet limited to water and the following CLEAR LIQUIDS: DO NOT eat solid food DO NOT chew gum DO NOT drink any of the following: Black coffee (no milk/cream) 7-UP Tea (black, green, herbal) Clear broth • NO red or purple liquid • NO liquids that you can't see through Gatorade (clear) Apple Juice • NO alcoholic beverages Popsicle w/o fruit or seed Jell-O • NO milk products 3. AT 6 PM: Follow the instructions below to mix and drink your Nulytely/Trilytely/Golytely/PEG medication. STEP 1: 6:00 PM on the night before the colonoscopy STEP 2: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM on the night before the colonoscopy STEP 3: After 8:00 PM on the night before the colonoscopy Your bottle will come pre-filled with the laxative medication. FILL this bottle with drinking water to make 4 liters of solution. SHAKE the bottle and start drinking the solution. DRINK an 8 ounce glass every 10 minutes until you finish 3 liters of the solution. The 3 liters should be finished by 8:00 PM If you have nausea or vomit, DO NOT STOP taking the laxative. Rest for 30 minutes and then resume the preparation as soon as the nausea improves. Continue to drink lots of clear liquids after you finish the 3 liters of the laxative, NO MORE Jell-O after midnight. The first bowel movement should occur 1-3 hours after the first cup with laxatives. AT _____________ AM (4 HOURS BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE) 1. SHAKE THE BOTTLE AGAIN and start taking 1 CUP (8.3 ounces/ ~ 250 ML) of the laxative every 10 minutes until you finish the remaining 1 liter in the gallon. After you finish the entire solution, take 3 more cups of water and your morning medications. Nothing else by mouth 2 hours before the colonoscopy 2. BRING all of your daily medication to the colonoscopy 3. TAKE your heart/blood pressure medication with small sips of water before you come to your procedure 4. If your colon output is not a clear yellow color or similar to water color after the laxative cleansing, inform the nurse when you arrive for your procedure. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT: You must have someone to drive you home after your procedure. The sedative medication makes it unsafe to drive on the day of the procedure. If you do not have a chaperone to drive you home, the appointment may need to be cancelled. You should not work after the colonoscopy. Plan to take the day off from work DO NOT bring children to your appointment, we do not have child care services Leave jewelry and valuable items at home If you have any questions, please contact our office at 408-347-9001.
