Name:_______________________________________________ Date:_____________ Class:_____________ Bell Ringer: The Cuban Missile Crisis Instructions: Examine the political cartoon. Read the background information. Answer the questions. Background: In the 1960s, the nation of Cuba, just miles south of Florida, experienced a Communist uprising. The Communist dictator of the USSR, Nikita Khrushchev, supported the Communist takeover and wanted to put nuclear missiles on the island of Cuba. This way, the USSR would have close missiles to attack the USA, if nuclear war broke out. President John F. Kennedy found this action unacceptable. He demanded that the USSR not put any nuclear weapons in Cuba and JFK sent a blockade around the island. The world feared that the USSR and the USA were about to enter into a nuclear war. In the end, the USA agreed to allow Cuba to remain Communist and the USSR agreed to not place missiles on the island. The incident was called the Cuban Missile Crisis. The map above shows the strike radius that the USSR would have had, if they had placed nuclear weapons in Cuba. In the cartoon above, Nikita Khrushchev, pictured to the left, is arm wrestling JFK, pictured to the right. Yet, both are sitting on hydrogen bombs.
