Make Flash Cards using these terms and definitions. Study these 20 minutes each night.
Thermal Energy
The energy from atoms within a substance or
object bumping into each other. (heat)
Conduction
The movement or transfer of heat from one
object or substance to another by direct
contact.
Radiation
The transfer or movement of thermal energy
from one object to another by invisible waves.
(Think of how the Sun warms your body as you
face it.)
This is the transfer or movement of thermal
energy through fluids such as water or air.
Warm fluids will rise while the cooler fluids
will sink. (Lava Lamp and Boiling Water).
Heat moving from one area or substance to
another.
Convection
Thermal Energy
transfer
Energy
Transformation
Power Plant
Turbine
One type of energy changing into another type
of energy. (A car uses chemical energy
gasoline and transforms it into mechanical
energy.)
A facility where electricity is generated from
• Chemical energy (fossil fuels)
• Mechanical energy (wind)
• Nuclear Energy (nuclear fission)
• Gravitational energy
(hydroelectric)
• occasionally Radiant Energy or
solar power
The part of the power plant with blades( like a
fan or propeller). IN EVERY power plant, it is
Mechanical Energy that turns the turbine.
