Integers
Numbers greater than 0 are called positive numbers. (1, 2, 3…)
Numbers less than 0 are called negative numbers. (-1, -2, -3…)
Zero is neither positive nor negative.
Integers are the set of whole numbers and their opposites.
This set includes the positive numbers, the negative numbers
and zero.

opposites
Opposites are a pair of numbers that are equal distances away
from zero on opposite sides of zero on the number line.
Show relationships between negative numbers, and between
positive and negative numbers with the signs <, >, or =.
For example:
-3 > -5
-2 < 4
1 > -1
-9 = -9
Absolute Value
When dealing with integers at this math level, the distance of a
number from zero is called that number’s absolute value.
It is written as |x|, meaning the absolute value of x.
For example:
The absolute value of -2 is 2, because -2 is 2 spaces from 0.
It is written as
|-2| = 2
Absolute value tells how far from zero.
Positive and negative signs tell in which direction from zero.

Integers in Real-World Context
Integers can be found in real world situations, such as…
Temperature: In both the Celsius and Fahrenheit
scales, temperatures sometimes fall below 0
degrees. When that happens, the temperature is
written as a negative number.
Example: The temperature at 6pm was 5°C. The
temperature dropped 10° in one hour. At 7pm, the
temperature was -5°C.
Accounting: If the balance of a financial account
falls below 0 dollars, it is listed as a negative
number. That means there is a deficit (or debt) in the
account.
Example: Martin had $45 in his bank account. He spent $20 on
Tuesday, $5 on Wednesday, and $30 on Thursday. His bank
account balance is -$10.
Elevation: Sea level is considered to
be 0 elevation. Any elevation above
that is a positive number. Any
elevation below that may be listed as a
negative number.
Example: Mt. McKinley, the highest
elevation in North America, is 20,320 feet above sea level. Death
Valley is 20,602 feet lower than Mt. McKinley. Death Valley is the
lowest elevation in North America at -282 feet.
