Mike began playing football at a young age, and immediately took to the game. He continued playing at Eastmoor High School having the good fortune of playing for legendary Coach Bob Stuart, who coached many future All Americans including the Griffin brothers. Growing up loving the Buckeyes, Mike accepted an offer to play Michael football at The University of Michigan under Coach Bo Schembechler. At Michigan, Mike had a stellar career, starting for three years, accumulating 332 tackles which ranks him, still today, in the top ten tacklers of all time in Michigan football history. He sustained a career ending knee injury four games into his senior season, but he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1984. Mike married Hope Weisman in 1986 and after a brief stay in Crown Point, Indiana, moved to Pickerington, Ohio in 1988where they raised four children, Justin, Zachary, Jacoby and Kallie. All three sons have been selected First Team Division One All State high school football players, and all three have gone on to play football for The Ohio State University Buckeyes. Kallie is presently in junior high and pursuing softball. Mike began his professional career in the transportation logistics field where he spent 15 years working for Consolidated Freightways. Seven years into his career, he began a small lawn care company on the side, which he named Grass Groomers, Inc. The company has grown into one of the leaders in the industry in Central Ohio. Dennis Mendelson was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1947. Dennis lived in Bexley and attended Bexley schools, where he became the Captain of the Swim Team and received many diving awards. He learned diving and gymnastic skills at the Jewish Community Center and competed for the JCC and Bexley High School swim programs. Dennis continued his athletic career on an athletic Dennis scholarship at The Ohio State University in gymnastics where he specialized in trampoline events. He married Stephanie Harnett and together they have three children, Jennifer, Aaron and Joshua and five granddaughters. He works at the “Virtual Schoolhouse” in Cleveland. Charles Solomon Award Ben Golden was born in Cleveland in 1916. After graduating from Cleveland John Adams High School he enlisted in the US Army. Ben fought valiantly for the US during World War II and received a Purple Heart for his efforts. After his honorable discharge in 1945, he along with his wife, Rose, made Columbus home. Ben Ben was a businessman during the day and a JCC volunteer at night. Like others his age, and with the JCC, the “best game in town”, he set up shop and became a leading advocate for youth sports at the JCC. Ben would be classified as a “hands on” person who gave of his time and effort year round. Not one for the boardroom or committees, he was the “go to” person to implement the various activities and programs of the athletic department; he ran the leagues! The kids in the1960’s, 70’s and into the 80’s loved Ben. They respected him both as an adult interested in their personal welfare and as a coach. Every player wanted to play on a Ben Golden coached team, be it baseball or basketball. A stickler for the rules and making sure they were upheld, he was more interested that all players had the opportunity to participate and play their “fair share”. He was way ahead of the common theme, No Kid Left Behind. Ben was there for everyone: players, parents, officials and the professional staff. His countless hours in the gym and on the diamond is well acknowledged. Ben left a strong legacy for all to emulate. Willie Robinson was born in and raised in Atlanta till his family relocated to Columbus, when he was three years old. He spent his youth growing up on the north side of Columbus and attended Central High School , 1967 to 1970. It was there that Willie was named 2nd team All City Willie basketball team his sophomore and junior years. As a senior, Willie was named 1st team All City as well as 1st team All District. Willie was granted a scholarship to play basketball at Louisiana State University and received a bachelors degree in history in 1974. After graduation, Willie travelled to Europe where he played basketball professionally for two years. Upon his return, Willie began his career with Franklin County Juvenile Court and has been a bailiff there for over 32 years. Willie has been officiating at the JCC for 21 years. He has also volunteered his time as the head of officials for the JCCA Maccabi Games as well as coaching our Maccabi basketball for many years.
