Product Families Allied Telesis media converters enable the connection of disparate cabling types in networks where many cabling types exist. Network segments may also operate at different speeds and media converters can be used to convert between one speed and another. Allied Telesis’ extensive line of media converters is designed to cater for the most common network cabling interconnection needs. With devices for both unmanaged and managed network environments, Allied Telesis solutions offer a simple, seamless and practical solution to copper-fiber and network speed conversion. Typically, media converters are used to connect copper and fiber-optic cabling that coexist in a network. Converters exist in a variety of standalone, multi-port and modular form factors. These different physical forms address the need for different applications and conversion densities. Media conversion solutions offer the ability to inexpensively: n Extend network distances by adding fiber only where it is required n Add new devices without replacing costly cable n Keep pace with changing technology n Provide an inter-connection between media types that is transparent to the network n Integrate high-bandwidth devices into the network » Unmanaged Copper Speed Fiber Speed Standalone Multi-channel Modular 100 100 MC100 series AT-MCF2000 ConverteonTM 1000 1000 MC1000 series — ConverteonTM 10/100 100 FS200 series — ConverteonTM 10/100/1000 1000 GS2000 series — ConverteonTM Copper Speed Fiber Speed Standalone Multi-channel Modular 100 100 Converteon AT-MCF2000 ConverteonTM 1000 1000 ConverteonTM — ConverteonTM 10/100 100 ConverteonTM — ConverteonTM 10/100/1000 1000 ConverteonTM — ConverteonTM » Managed TM Allied Telesis is the World’s largest media converter manufacturer. Our vast range of products provide connectivity solutions for almost all the needs of Carrier, Enterprise, and SMB customers. 140 | Media Conversion Allied Telesis | 141 Media Conversion Media Conversion Media Conversion Applications SMB Network Extension Legacy FDDI Upgrades In this example, a small business is located on two floors. The main network switch on the ground floor was originally purchased to provide only copper Gigabit connections to the servers, and Fast Ethernet connections to the users. To allow for new connections to the first floor, a fiber-optic cable has to be used in the dry riser. The media converters provides the necessary copper to fiber conversion. Legacy FDDI networks are based on multi-mode fiber. Typically these cables are unable to carry standards-based Gigabit Ethernet more than 300m. However, by using Allied Telesis’ Gigabit Extender, the multi-mode fiber cables can be re-used to carry Gigabit Ethernet up to 2km.This can eliminate the considerable cost of re-cabling with single-mode fiber. Switch Switch Enterprise Network Building Interconnection Distributed buildings in an office complex or campus environment are normally interconnected using fiber-optic cables. Individual floors in buildings may also utilize fiber connections in the risers. Buildings that have limited fiber ports on the main distribution switch require media converters to enhance the number of fiber connections that can be made to it. L 142 | Media Conversion Allied Telesis | 143 Media Conversion Media Conversion Applications Product Features Hospitality/Dormitories Media converters have no MAC or IP address and are normally intended to be transparent to the network they help interconnect. A growing need for troubleshooting, resiliency and network management has resulted in product features and capabilities that make them more visible and effective: Most hotel rooms and student dormitories, for example, have telephone connectivity to each room. Unfortunately, unless the buildings were constructed recently, many do not have any Ethernet cabling installed. Allied Telesis VDSL media converters allow the existing installed cable to carry telephony traffic, and also carry new high-speed Internet access. This can eliminate the considerable cost of re-cabling the building. n MissingLinkTM n Smart MissingLink TM n Auto MDI/MDI-X n Redundancy n IEEE 802.11ah OAM MissingLinkTM Fast Ethernet Switch Allied Telesis’ MissingLinkTM feature enables a media converter to pass the link status of their connections and thereby trigger corrective action when a problem on a link is detected. For example, if the twisted pair cable to the 10/100TX port on an Allied Telesis media converter were to fail, the unit would respond by dropping the link on the 100FX fiberoptic port. In doing so, the media converter notifies the device to which it is attached that the connection on its twisted pair port has been lost. If the failure had started with the fiber-optic cabling, the unit would drop the link to the twisted pair port. Most managed devices, such as switches and routers, can be configured to take a specific recovery action in the event of the loss of connection on a port. In some cases, the unit can be configured to seek a redundant path to a disconnected endnode or send out a trap to a network management station, and so alert the network administrator of the problem. Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) The majority of new broadband access networks use Ethernet/IP to deliver converged voice, video and data services to business and residential users. Depending on the nature of the FTTH deployment, network operators may seek to deploy either a specialist access platform or a mixture of switches and media converters. Depending on the type of multiservice gateway deployed, media converters may be used both at the CO/remote and the customer residence. 144 | Media Conversion Allied Telesis 145 Media Conversion Media Conversion Applications Smart MissingLinkTM Redundancy The Smart MissingLinkTM feature performs the same function as MissingLinkTM with the addition that the LINK LED indicators show exactly which link has been broken. A flashing LINK LED shows which port is still operational, whilst a non-lit LINK LED shows which port has failed. For example, on a UTP to fiber media converter, if the network twisted pair cable to the 10/100TX port were to fail, the LINK LED on the 100FX fiber-optic port will blink, indicating a failed connection on the twisted pair port. If the failure was with the fiber-optic cabling, the LINK LED on the twisted pair port would blink. This type of network monitoring and fault notification enables network administrators to quickly see which port has failed and troubleshoot accordingly. In many cases, Allied Telesis media converters are critical components in a network carrying data between sites over long distances. It is imperative that all efforts are taken to ensure reliability of the network, and thus network design with redundancy is mandatory. The components most likely to fail are the power supplies. The majority of Allied Telesis media converters can be deployed with hotswappable, hot removable power supplies to ensure maximum uptime. Chassis Redundant Features Description AT-MCR12 Dual hot-swap power supplies 12 slot unmanaged chassis for standalone media converters Auto MDI/MDI-X AT-MCF2000 Dual hot-swap power supplies 2 slot multi-port blade chassis Twisted pair cables use two wires to carry data in one direction, and two wires to carry data in the reverse direction. Older generation Ethernet data ports can normally be configured by a push button or slide switch to allow them to transmit data on one pair, and receive on the other pair (MDI mode), or receive on the first pair and transmit on the second (MDI-X mode). To make installation simpler for the network installer, newer products support Auto MDI/MDI-X mode, allowing any Ethernet cable to be connected, irrespective of polarity, and the media converter will automatically adjust itself to provide a valid connection. Converteon Dual hot-swap power supplies Dual hot-swap management module Dual hot-swap fan module 18 slot modular chassis TM IEEE 802.11ah Ethernet-in-First-Mile As Ethernet moves from being an Enterprise-centric technology into a Carrier WAN and access technology, network designers need to have carrier-class capabilities in their Ethernet designs. IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet-in-First-Mile implements a set of Operational, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) capabilities for Ethernet links. These capabilities ensure backward compatibility with existing Ethernet implementations, while still providing advanced monitoring functionality required in public networks. See page 135. 146 | Media Conversion Allied Telesis | 147 Media Conversion Media Conversion Product Features Mounting Options Fiber Connectors Media converters can be mounted in a number of ways to suit the installation. Allied Telesis supports one of the major industry standards for fiber connectors: Desktop All Allied Telesis media converters have the option to be fitted with rubber feet. These allow the product to be desktop mounted. Fiber Connector Type Description LC Primarily used for Gigabit on modular SFP SC Primarily used for Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Rack ST Primarily used for Ethernet and Fast Ethernet All the larger multi-channel and modular media converters ship with 19” rack-mount kits as standard. Smaller media converters may also be rack-mounted in a number of ways. Fiber Cables The choice of fiber cable type is normally dictated by the distance that the network needs to be extended, and the speed of the data. There are two types of cable, multi-mode and single-mode. Speed Max Distance Multi-mode Max Distance Single-mode Ethernet (10Mbps) 2km 70km Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) 2km 70km Gigabit Ethernet (1000Mbps) 300m 80km 10G Ethernet (10Gbps) 80km — Most Enterprise networks use two fiber-optic cables, one for transmit and one for receive data. However, many Telco customers use single bi-direction transmission, using one single-mode fiber to carry one wavelength (color) in one direction and another wavelength in the reverse direction. This halves the cost of fiber deployment. This technique is occasionally used by Enterprise customers, especially in installations where fiber availability is limited. AT-MCR1 Chassis This small chassis can be rack-mounted, and allows a single standalone media converter, or two port switch, to be powered by an internal power supply. AT-MCR12 Chassis This chassis allows up to 12 standalone media converters or switches to be mounted in a chassis. The chassis supports optional redundant power supplies, and can be AC or DC powered. AT-Tray 1 and AT-Tray 4 These simple trays allow either one, or up to four standalone media converters to be mounted into a rack. Wall A standalone media converter or switch can be easily mounted on a wall, or under a table using the AT-WLMT wall-mount fixture. 148 | Media Conversion Allied Telesis | 149 Media Conversion Media Conversion Fiber Cable and Connector Types » Standalone/Rack-mountable & Wall-mounted Media Converters » ConverteonTM Distance AT-MCR12 Page Compatible No. 1000SX/SC x 1 port multi-mode Ext.
