Energy is the ability to do work. Energy makes things happen. It makes things go and makes
things move
Potential Energy is stored energy eg. When holding a ball in your hands it has potential energy
Kinetic Energy is energy in motion eg. When you let go of the ball and bounce it, the kinetic
energy from your muscles is transferred to the basketball to make it move.
Energy can NOT be created or destroyed or lost. Energy can only be transformed from one kind
of energy to another.
Our biggest source of light energy is the sun. Energy from the sun is transferred to plants. This is
called photosynthesis. When we eat plants, the energy from the plants is transferred to us to
help us grow, move and think.
Electricity is the flow of electrons from one atom to another. Electricity happens when an
electron spins away from its original atom and joins a new atom. When this electron joins the
new atom, an old electron is pushed out to the next atom. This repeats creating an electrical
current that can travel down a wire.
Nuclear energy comes from the nucleus (center) of an atom. Energy is released when an atom is
split into two smaller parts. This releases heat which is then transferred to create electricity
Electrical energy can be turned into other forms of energy such as light energy, heat energy, or
kinetic energy
Chemical energy is stored energy. This energy can be released when chemicals mix or when
things that were once alive (like wood or coal) are burned. When things are set on fire,
potential energy from things like wood are converted into different forms of energy such as light
and heat energy.
Heat energy is created when heat is added to molecules making them move quickly causing
heat. E.g. heat added to water makes the water molecules move quickly which makes the water
warmer. The energy in the hot water can then be transferred to other things.
Sound energy is energy that passes through things in waves. E.g. when you speak the energy in
your vocal cords vibrate. This energy flows through the air to someone else’s ears.
