Goal
It is beneficial in the study of Shakespeare’s plays to have a basic understanding of
the conditions in which his plays were performed. Having this understanding of the
audience and structure of the theatre allows students to make meaning of
Shakespeare’s plays. The goal of this web quest is an increased level of awareness
of theatre practices during Shakespeare’s time, with a focus on how plays were
performed at Globe theatre. Students will be able to apply this knowledge by
explaining the conditions of the theatre from the point of view of a playgoer seeing
and hearing one of Shakespeare’s plays.
8th Grade North Carolina Objectives addressed:
2.01 Analyze and evaluate informational materials that are read, heard, and/or
viewed.
2.02 Create a research product in both written and presentational form by.
6.01 Model an understanding of conventional written and spoken expression.
6.02 Continue to identify and edit errors in speech and written English.
Task/End Product
Your task is to research information about how plays were performed at the Globe
Theatre by using guided questions. Your research will focus on a particular year
and your view of the Globe theatre will depend on the amount of money you are
given to spend. The final product of this web quest is a detailed diary account
and sketch of the stage from a playgoer’s point of view during the time
Shakespeare’s plays were performed. You will be randomly selected to explain the
play-going experience from a point of view (based on the amount of money you
would have had to spend at the theatre) during a specific year in which
Shakespeare’s plays were performed at the Globe.
