Climate innovation will need to become a foundation for the future Australian economy. The scale of opportunity is vast. New Climate Economy estimates that around US$90 trillion of investment in global infrastructure is required to achieve a broad-based, low-carbon economy by 2030. Australian businesses that learn how to win and thrive in the new, low-carbon economy will be positioned to succeed in a world in transition. BIOFUELS Focus Build on the current nascent multi-jurisdictional work and incubate a sustainable transport fuels industry. ELECTRICITY SECTOR TRANSFORMATION Focus Build on the renewables sector and regulatory and policy frameworks, including PV solar and battery storage. ELECTRIFICATION OF TRANSPORT Focus Help Australian governments and business prepare for and embrace the mass electrification of urban mobility expected by 2030. SUSTAINABLE RESILIENT CITIES INTERESTS Climate KIC Australia will develop blueprints for more sustainable, low carbon cities. ZERO CARBON CITIES Focus Engage the Australian cities that already have zero carbon goals to take part in the initiative, potentially in transport and energy first. SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY Focus This flagship goes beyond conventional thinking on transport by including non-motorised mobility options such as walking and cycling. RESILIENT TROPICAL AUSTRALIA Focus This flagship will build on climate adaptation work being undertaken with Townsville City Council focusing on climate-adapted tropical housing. REGIONS IN TRANSITION INTERESTS Climate KIC Australia will undertake initiatives to encourage low carbon innovation and entrepreneurship in these specific areas. REGIONAL ECONOMIC TRANSITIONS Focus Flexible, coordinated approach, tailored to a region’s needs and the opportunities in order to achieve a new low carbon economy for growth and inclusion of residents. INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIA Focus The program will seek to work with and to empower indigenous communities, linked traditional knowledge to leading-edge climate-focused innovation. SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Focus This flagship program will explore the contribution of regional tourism to mitigating greenhouse emissions while adapting to the current and likely future unavoidable impacts of climate change. KEY ENABLERS Climate KIC Australia investigates cutting edge approaches to financing, decisions making and policy approaches and tests them on the ground. POLICY AND REGULATION Focus Policy is crucial to setting the framework that will allow the new economy to thrive and address the challenge of adaptation and mitigation. FINANCE Focus Exploring and helping develop innovative financial tools will be an important enabler for the required systemic changes Climate-KIC is setting out to achieve. DECISION METRICS Focus The Climate-KIC will help establish a set of decision-support tools that assist policy makers and businesses factor climate change risk and opportunity into their strategic decision-making. Advisory Council with expertise across Climate-KIC themes. Board with core partners with international links and an independent chair. National focus with local and regional activities. Guided by best-practice governance principles. Balances flexibility with accountability. FUNDING An estimated $2.7 million is needed in the first 12 months. Core partners will provide the initial investment in the establishment phase, with an ongoing commitment to contribute to overarching KIC management costs.. Post-establishment, Climate-KIC Australia will be designed to grow and scale according to its success as it develops on initial portfolio activities. Flagship programs, component projects, education and the acceleration fund are intended to be self-funding, augmented by contributions (mainly in-kind) from core and associate partners. Climate-KIC Australia will ultimately be self-funding. We predict this to take approximately 5 years, although growth may be more rapid.
