5) It was toasty hot at Mr G’s house yesterday! During the day the
temperature went up to 108ºF. During the night the temperature went
down to 68ºF. How many degrees did the temperature drop? Draw a
Thermometer to show the problem.

1) What is a Krill?
Krill are little shrimp like creatures that live in the sea.
They are about
the size of a
jelly bean.
There are
more krill in
the sea than
the weight of
all the humans
on Earth
combined!
Question: So what creatures eat Krill?
Answer, just about everything bigger that a Krill eats Krill! Poor Krill!
Like birds, fish, penguins, even whales.

In fact the largest animal that has ever lived on Earth eats Krill.
What animal is that? It’s a Blue Whale.
An adult is about 115 ft long, and can weigh over 125 tons!
Just the heart of a Blue Whale weighs about a ton and is the size of a
small car!

How much does a Blue Whale eat?
So, how much is four tons of Krill? This truck holds 4 tons. That’s a
big stomach!

A Blue Whale can eat four tons of Krill a day. Lets calculate how much
a Blue What eats.
Use this table.

2) Properties and Operations
Commutative Property
In a product you can multiply the numbers in any order.
Numbers: 8(-5) = -5(8)
Math:
ab = ba
Associative Property
Changing the grouping of the numbers in a product does not change
the product.
Numbers: (3 • 10) • 4 = 3 • (10 • 4)
Math:
(ab)c = a(bc)
Example: 4 (-7) (25)
[-7 (4)] 25
-7 (4 • 25)
-7 (100)
-700
Commutative Property of Multiplication
Associative Property of Multiplication
Multiply 4 • 25
Multiply -7 • 100
The Distributive Property: When you use the distributive property
you distribute the number outside the the parentheses to each
number inside the parentheses.
Like this:
Math
Numbers
a(b + c) = ab + ac
4(6 + 3) = 4(6) + 4(3)
a(b - c) = ab - ac
4(6 - 3) = 4(6) - 4(3)

Example:
You are going camping with two friends. So, you purchase three sets of
camping equipment, that is, you buy three backpacks that costs $90
dollars each, three sleeping bags that cost $70 dollars each. How much
did you spend?
To do this problem, “chunk it!” Break it into parts…like this.
1) You are going camping with two friends. How many of you are
there? Three (3).
2) You purchase three sets of camping equipment.
3) Three backpacks cost $90 dollars each.
4) Three sleeping bags cost $70 dollars each.
5) How much did you spend for everything?
Total cost = 3 (90 + 70)
= 3(90) + 3(70)
= 270 + 210
= 480
OR, you could do it this way too,
Total cost = 3 (90 + 70)
= 3 (160) = 480

Period:
1) Icebergs are mountains of ice that float in the ocean. About 9/10
of an iceberg is below sea level. Questions: a) If this iceberg is 100
ft. tall (the amount above the water), how much of it is below sea
level. b) How tall is whole iceberg from top to bottom.2) Use the
100 ft.
? ft.
1/10 Above sea
level
9/10 Below sea
level
2) Use the Distributive Property to evaluate these expressions.
a) 5(7 + 2)
b) 7(4 - 2)
C) -3 (9 + 1)
3) You and your friend go to the movies. Tickets cost $9.00 each, and
popcorn and a drink cost $5.00 each. Use the Distributive Property to
find the total amount spent at the movies.
