THE SECOND WORLD WAR Winston Churchill, the man with the cigar, was the major British political figure during the Second World War. He was born in an aristocratic family. He entered the army and worked as a journalist and as a politician. In September 1939 Germany invaded Poland, and Britain entered the war. In 1940 Winston Churchill became both Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, and he convinced the British to fight with a famous speech: “ ..I have nothing to offer but blood…….tears and sweat. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be…..!” British towns were bombed by the German Air Force and in 1941 Japan attacked British colonial possession, including India. In the same year Germany attacked the Soviet Union and Japan attacked the USA at Pearl Harbour – Hawaii. Britain, helped by its stronger allied countries, the USSR and the USA, was able to resist. Germany was invaded and France was occupied. The American new atomic bombs destroyed Nagasaki and Hiroshima, two large Japanese towns. Thousands of people died and many others died later as a consequence of the radiation.
