Bacteria & bananas
Audrey Alvarado| Mrs. McNees | Syracuse Jr. High School
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• In what conditions will a banana stay ripe?
RESEARCH
• facts:
– “The specific nutrition contained in peel depends on the stage of maturity”, and
that’s why I got all the same color.
– “Many of these bacteria feed on dead organisms or organic waste”.
– “As bananas, are a popular fruit consumed worldwide, with yearly production over
145 million tonnes in 2011, there is a significant amount of banana peel waste being
generated as well”, the peel a are always being wasted so there plenty for bacteria.
– Bacteria can cause food poisoning and bacteria can always be on your food.
– They can live in extreme environments.

HYPOTHESIS
• If you put a banana in a green bag, it will then stay ripe, because it
bacteria can’t eat the nurturance and its suppose to keep fruits fresh.
PROCEDURE: MATERIALS
• 4 bananas
• Green bag
• Brown bag
• Refrigerator
• Notebook
• Sharpie, pen, pencil
• Sticky notes
PROCEDURE: STEPS
1. Place one banana on the counter, another in a brown bag, one in a
green bag, and the last in the refrigerator.
2. With sticky notes Label each banana ( A, B, C &D)
3. Record the observations of each banana in the notebook for 7 day
and state which is the best for each day.
VARIABLES
• Constants: from the same store, same color
• Controlled variable: the green bag compared to the three others
• Independent (manipulated) variable: the other conditions of the
bananas.
• Dependent (measured) variable: the amount of brown stuff
DATA/OBSERVATIONS
• Day 1: They all looked the same.
• Day 2: The best is banana A
• Day 3: The Best is banana A
• Day 4: The new best is banana C
• Day 5: still banana C
• Day 6: still banana C
DATA/OBSERVATIONS
Day 7: This is the last day and the best by far is banana C.
CONCLUSION
• In conclusion in what conditions will a banana stay the most ripe? The
answer is in a green bag, banana C was the banana in this bag. The
reason I think that this was that answer was because I only opened
the bad once to take a photo and so the air couldn’t get in and ether
did the bacteria. Also the package for the bags says,” helps keep a
variety of fruits & veggies fresh!”, so that’s what its suppose to do.
