Meditation Service
Dharma Service
10–11:30 am
4–5:30 pm
The Sunday morning meditation service consists of two 25-minute sittings and
a Dharma talk. You can sit on a mat and cushion or a chair. Please dress comfortably.
After the service, tea is served and the bookstore is open.
The Sunday afternoon Dharma Service consists of meditation, chanting,
contemplation and a question-and-answer session.
Children’s Service
We welcome children and their parents for meditation, chanting and Dharma fun.

Warm Welcome to You!
Be quiet, look within and enjoy the healing power of silence. Let go of your sorrow and
attachments. Your inner core and wisdom heart remain untouched either by insult or by
praise. So have faith in your heart and trust yourself. Sit free from fear and worries. Rely
on your true and sincere heart for your meditation. Pay attention and concentrate on your
breath. Let peace and happiness prevail and spread through you. Remember that your life
is intimately connected with all other life. May all beings benefit from your presence as a
living embodiment of peace and happiness!
We encourage you to participate in the Buddhist movement in the West by becoming a
temple member. All are welcome to become General or Supporting Members. Those who
have completed the Introductory Meditation Course are encouraged to become Practicing
Members.
Membership Donations
Members’ monthly donations fully support the temple’s Dharma work as temple priests
and resident seminary students live frugally under the vow of poverty. Suggested donation: 2% of annual income (minimum $480/year for Practicing Members,
$240/year for General Members and $100/year for Supporting Members).
Zen Buddhist Temple–Ann Arbor
Spring & Fall Membership Meetings
The temple was formally opened in 1981 as part of the Buddhist Society for
Compassionate Wisdom (BSCW, formerly Zen Lotus Society). The building was
purchased and renovated with major support from the Society’s temple in Toronto.
Teachers hold membership meetings twice annually in order to gain a better
understanding of each member’s practice and home/work situation. Small group
meetings allow members to seek advice, share experiences and discuss a pertinent topic.
Rev. Haju Sunim, resident priest, came to the Society in 1978. She was ordained as a priest
by Ven. Samu Sunim in 1991 and received Dharma transmission in 1999.
Membership Sittings for Practicing Members
The temple functions on three levels:
1. As a temple providing meditation guidance, empowerment practice and lessons
on right livelihood for members, as well as lectures, meditation instruction and
religious services for the public.
2. As a training center and monastery for ordained members of the Sangha and
Dharma students of the Maitreya Buddhist Seminary, as well as for Dharma
workers and visitors who stay at the temple for extended periods of training or retreats.
3. As a Sangha or community where temple members can develop an awareness of
Dharma family, support one another’s spiritual cultivation and promote an enlightened
society.
Sunday mornings at 6:30 am and Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm. Practicing Members
can stay overnight at the temple on Saturday for early Sunday morning sittings. The
temple also welcomes Practicing Members to daily morning meditation at 5:30 am and
the evening chanting service at 7 pm Monday through Friday.
Work Practice
Temple members and friends are encouraged to support the temple by offering their
services and skills while cultivating mindfulness. Please contact the temple to volunteer.
Lifecycle Ceremonies
The temple offers marriage, blessing, funeral and memorial ceremonies. Please inquire.
Meditation Instruction
Meditation is the heart of all Buddhist practice. Zen meditation is both a spiritual and physical discipline, based on a clear and simple lifestyle with a strong focus. Simplicity, clarity and spiritual joy are guidelines for attaining peace of mind, developing a compassionate heart and encouraging right livelihood.
Sangha Day Meetings
Each season, members and friends gather to renew their commitment to the Buddhist
path and develop Dharma friendship with fellow practitioners. After the Sunday morning meditation service, Advisory Council members report on temple business and invite
discussion on matters important to the Sangha. This is followed by a vegetarian potluck
lunch and fellowship. Bring your family, friends and talents for spontaneous entertainment! All welcome. Saturday, March 20 at 6 pm (Zenefit), and Sundays at 11:15 am on
June 13, September 19, December 12, February 6, 2011 and March 20, 2011.
Residential Opportunities
The temple offers the Visitor’s Program for people who want to spend some time living
in the temple to cultivate their practice. They follow the schedule and participate in temple programs in the mornings and/or evenings. The program is available to meet personal
needs and wishes. Participants can seriously pursue their spiritual path or simply seek
peace and harmony in a wholesome environment while maintaining their job or studies.
Prior arrangement with the temple director is necessary. The program is usually available
throughout the year. $45 per day; $200 per week; $600 per month.
Yoga Courses
Following the Sivananda yoga tradition, we emphasize postures, breathing, relaxation,
and meditation. Yoga I is for beginning students and Yoga II for those who have some
yoga experience. The yoga courses are offered throughout the year, each consisting of six
Tuesday or Thursday evening classes.
Yongmaeng Jeongjin Retreat
Yongmaeng Jeongjin, which means “Fearless Practice,” is a three-day or five-day intensive
meditation retreat. It is a period to free oneself from all worldly ties and absorb oneself
completely in concentration. Yongmaeng Jeongjin provides a wonderful opportunity for
discovering wisdom mind and developing a compassionate heart. It is usually reserved for
practicing members or for non-members with serious meditation experience. Minimum
attendance is two days. For others, one-day retreats are available. Please inquire.
The temple offers beginning meditation instruction in two formats throughout the year.
The Introductory Meditation Course consists of five consecutive Thursday evening
classes from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The Overnight Introductory Meditation Course
(Beginner’s Zen Retreat) runs from Friday at 7 pm through Saturday at noon, with an
optional overnight stay at the temple.

Dharma Guardian Program
This program is designed to bring the Way of Buddha into the home and/or work environment and is geared to suit different situations that may arise. The threefold purpose
is ethical discipline and awakening, cultivation of compassionate heart and creation of a
culture of enlightenment. The one-year to year-and-a-half program consists of Monday
through Friday home and work practice, keeping a journal, study and monthly consultation with and report to the teacher. Please inquire.
Dharma Worker Program
The Dharma Worker Program is a three- to six-month mindfulness and novice training, which can be either residential or nonresidential. The vital spirit of the training is
to cultivate a mindful attitude and to develop Dharma habits in order to remove karmic
obstacles. The residential program allows Dharma workers to maintain their jobs while
following the temple schedule. The nonresidential Dharma worker does the program on
weekends from Friday evening through noon on Sunday.
Buddhist Society for Compassionate Wisdom
The Buddhist Society for Compassionate Wisdom (BSCW), a North American Buddhist
order, was founded by Ven. Samu Sunim in August 1967 in his one-bedroom flat in
Manhattan. While in New York City, Sunim worked all night for UPS and conducted
meditation in the evenings and on weekends.
Sunim was born in South Korea in 1941. Orphaned during the Korean War, he entered a
Buddhist monastery at the age of 17 following a period of homelessness. He trained as a
novice monk and then did his Zen study under Master Seolbong Sunim (1890–1969) at
Beomeo-sa Monastery in Busan, Korea.
The establishment of Buddhism in the West has global implications, not only for the
history of Buddhism but also for world culture and spirituality. The wisdom teachings
of the Buddhist tradition are unique in their approach to human spirituality. We believe
in the worth of being human and trust the best of being humane. It is the purpose of the
Buddhist Society for Compassionate Wisdom to facilitate the integration of Buddhism
in the West by building a peace bridge to go beyond the culture of self and the culture of
non-self.
Ten Dharma Gates of Spring Wind Sangha
1. Buddha Shakyamuni attained Enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya.
2. He saw with his wisdom eye that all beings were endowed with Buddha-nature,
each and every one, with no exception.
3. Thereafter, the Buddha spent forty-five years on the road, teaching the Way of
Buddha to the multitude, for the peace of the world and happiness of all beings.
4. Since that time, Buddhas, bodhisattvas and great masters of the ten directions and
the three worlds have carried forward the truth. They have declared that all beings are
Buddhas from the very beginning, striving with this teaching to save everyone from
ignorance and suffering.
5. Over the centuries and in successive generations, they made special vows out of
compassion and used many skillful means to inspire their contemporaries and fellow
beings. They urged everyone to look for the Buddha within.
6. Together these Buddhas, bodhisattvas and great masters have passed on to us
the Dharma of hope and purification and the Way of wisdom and emancipation.
They have entrusted us with the continued transmission of Dharma and the light
of wisdom.
Maitreya Buddhist Seminary
Maitreya Buddhist Seminary (MBS) is designed for people who aspire to become
Buddhist teachers without renouncing their worldly life pursuits, as well as for people who
are willing to undertake full monastic training in an urban setting. MBS offers a three-year practical education based on a teacher-disciple relationship. Students experience hands-on training (study and practice) while dealing with the realities of
everyday life. The training is based on the Five Liberation Gates:
1. The Liberation Gate of Meditation Practice
2. The Liberation Gate of Doctrinal Study
3. The Liberation Gate of Rituals and Ceremonials
4. The Liberation Gate of Cultivation of Devotional Heart
5. The Liberation Gate of Cultivation of Wisdom Heart
Upon completion, students are ordained as junior priests or junior Dharma teachers.
A priest is a full-time resident in the monastic community fully supported by the Society,
while a Dharma teacher is a part-time teacher running his or her own temple or affiliated
with a local temple of the BSCW.
7. When we awaken to the Buddha within, surrender ourselves to the tradition of
Three Jewels, and apprehend the manifestation of the three bodies of Buddha, then
Dharma sun begins to shine in our everyday life; the wheel of Dharma turns; we are
blessed by its turning; and we live in the Dharma realm amidst the ailing and troubled
world.
8. Out of our deep humility and boundless gratitude to the Buddhas and bodhisattvas
before us, we wake up again and again, we vow constant practice, we strive to shine
again out of clouds. “Be ye a lamp.”
9. Remember that it is your Buddha who meditates, lights candles, chants and does
prostrations. Remember that it is your bodhisattva who plays the wake-up moktak,
rings the bell, cleans the temple and greets people at the door. Remember that each
of your acts is nothing short of full awakening and that each service you render
completely fulfills your bodhisattva vow to liberate all beings.
10. Stop seeking holiness, for the Way of Buddha is no other than ordinary everyday
life. Honor all beings, for Buddhas and bodhisattvas are no other than common ordinary people.
March
March is the month of Parinirvana Day, the passing away of Shakyamuni Buddha.
The historical Buddha taught us how to realize our Buddha-nature within so that we can
be enlightened in this lifetime and transmit the tradition of compassionate wisdom to
future generations. Therefore, it is an occasion to cultivate penitence, humility and
gratitude befitting buddhas in the making.

Information & Orientation for Precept-Taking & Renewing
Open to all who are interested in learning about precept-taking or renewing. The
Buddhist journey always begins by taking refuge in the Three Jewels and accepting the
Precepts. The Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma and Sangha) provide a spiritual focus
while the Precepts furnish us with moral guidelines. Please remember that taking
precepts is not only for your sake but also for the sake of your family and friends, the
peace of the world and the happiness of all beings. There are three good reasons for
renewing your precepts. First, your precepts can gather dust and may lose their moral
and spiritual power if not renewed on a regular basis. Second, you must renew your
precepts to restore your integrity if you made mistakes and violated your precepts.
Third, by renewing your precepts, you are renewing yourself as a Buddhist and bodhisattva, so that your awareness can grow. Buddhists are happy, energetic and helpful
people who can make a difference in society. Therefore, if you are unhappy, lethargic
or unhelpful, it is time to renew your precepts. After orientation, five or six meetings
will be held to discuss the precepts and prepare for the ceremony.
