An air mass is a large body of air with similar
properties all through it
The most important properties are
Temperature
Amount of water vapor

Air Mass
3
…
…
…
Forms when air stays over an area for some time.
It takes the Temperature and Water vapor of that
area.
They are moved because of Wind.

What are the characteristics of
the air mass that formed here?

Front – When air Masses Meet
5
Is a boundary between two air masses.
… It gets its name from the kind of air that moves
into the area

Front

A cold front brings colder air into an area.
A warm front brings warmer air into an area.
Stationary Front does not move very much or it moves
back and forth over the same area.

Why does precipitation result when warm
air is forced up quickly by a cold front?
7
The warm air contains water vaporÆ warm air rises, it cools
and water vapor condenses to form clouds. Eventually,
precipitation falls.
Why does the warm air rise? When cooler air moves in, it
forces warmer air to move up quickly.
ÆThe rising air forms cumulus clouds along the steep
boundary. Heavy precipitation often falls at a cold front.

Stationary Front
8
How do you know that the front above your area is
stationary? You know you have a stationary front in your
area, when the weather in your area would change little
over an extended period of time.
