Life’s Worth Hearing Exploring A Baha® Bone Conduction System 2 I T ’ S T I M E T O G E T B A C K W H AT Y O U ’ V E B E E N M I S S I N G . Chuck H. - Baha recipient Opening up a new world of sound. Everyone has a different story. Perhaps you woke up one morning and found that you couldn’t hear on one side. Maybe you went through childhood struggling to hear even though you tried hearing aid after hearing aid. Or, you simply learned to cope with your hearing loss, rather than doing everything you really wanted. Can you relate to one of these stories? If so, then you’re not alone. These are real stories from people who today benefit from a Baha® bone conduction system from Cochlear and are now experiencing a whole new world of sound. By using your body’s unique ability to conduct sound, the Baha System has the potential to give you a more complete and fulfilling listening experience. And, the results may be life changing. “When they turned my Baha on, it was like when the Wizard of Oz changed from black and white to color.” – Meryl B., Baha System recipient 3 4 E V E RY G O O D D E C I S I O N I S B A S E D O N K N OW L E D G E . Hope when you need it most. How do you know if your hearing loss can be treated with the Baha System? Every hearing loss story is different, and the causes vary widely from person to person. For example, your hearing loss may affect one ear or two; and it may stem from a problem in the inner, middle or outer ear, or from a combination of places. However, there is one thing that remains constant for anyone who may qualify for the Baha System. Your hearing loss must fall into one of three categories—single-sided deafness, conductive hearing loss or mixed hearing loss. SINGLE-SIDED DEAFNESS CONDUCTIVE HEARING LOSS MIXED HEARING LOSS You have little or no hearing in one ear, but normal hearing in the other ear You have a problem with your outer or middle ear Possible Causes: • Growth or tumor • Sudden deafness • Blockage in the ear canal • Birth defects • Aging • Head trauma • Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal, or middle ear structures • Meniere’s disease • Middle ear infections • Head trauma • Genetics Possible Causes: • Adverse reactions to drugs You have a problem with your outer or middle ear, and your inner ear Any of the causes of conductive hearing loss plus any of the following: • Exposure to loud noise • Genetics • Meniere’s disease Ask yourself the following questions. If you answer “yes” to any of them, then the Baha System may be right for you. • Can you only hear from one side? • Do you have trouble getting sufficient loudness when using hearing aids? • Do you battle feedback or distorted sound quality when using hearing aids? • Do you suffer from sore or irritated ears due to your hearing aids? • Do you have draining ears? • Do you have malformed ears or ear canals? 5 Introducing the miracle of bone conduction. There are two ways we hear sound, through air conduction and through bone conduction. They both work together to help us listen to and perceive sound. However, when we hear ourselves speak, it is actually the lower frequency caused by vibrations in the bone that help us to perceive our ‘normal’ tone of voice. The Baha System works on the exact same principle, only on a much more sophisticated scale. While a hearing aid tries to push sound through the damaged part of the ear, the Baha System uses your natural ability to conduct sound to bypass the outer and middle ear, and sends clearer, more crisp sound directly to your inner ear. TRY IT FIRST, THEN DECIDE With the Baha System, you have the unique advantage of trying it first before you make any decisions. Make an appointment with your Hearing Implant Specialist today. 6 “Getting the Baha System definitely was a life changing experience. I was able to pick up sounds that I hadn’t heard in years; and they weren’t just louder, they were clearer. It was incredible.” – John K., Baha System recipient More possibilities for a lifetime of better hearing. There are two types of Baha Systems to help meet your individual needs and lifestyle – the Baha Attract System and the Baha Connect System. Both offer unique Cochlear technology designed to help you hear and communicate with confidence. You should talk to your hearing healthcare provider about who is a candidate for a Baha. Before any surgery, it is important to talk to your doctor about CDC guidelines for pre-surgical vaccinations. Baha is contraindicated for patients with inadequate bone quality or quantity to provide stability and support for the implant, or in patients who will be unable to maintain and clean the skin around the abutment. In the U.S., use of the implanted fixture is also contraindicated in children under age 5 years. Baha implantation is a surgical procedures carries with it the risks typical of surgery. All surgical procedures include an element of risk, and it is impossible to guarantee success. The device may fail to osseointegrate for a number of reasons, including physiological and surgical issues as well as traumatic impact to the implant site. On rare occasions the skin around the abutment may become inflamed from a mild infection or the skin may grow back towards its original thickness.
