Mrs. Hall AP Human Geography Summer Assignment To introduce us to a broad view of history we will read Tom Sandage’s
A History of the World in Six Glasses
, a condensed but effective synopsis of world history as seen through the distribution and consumption of six different drinks. This book is available in paperback at local bookstores such as Borders and Barnes & Noble (if they don’t have any copies on the shelf they can order a copy for you), and online at Amazon. You can also try used book sites such as the Advanced Book Exchange (www.abe.com), which has books at very low prices. There is even a copy at the Richmond Public Library! Important Instructions: Your assignment should be typed in 12 point font, Times New Roman, and 1 inch margins. The directions for your assignment are given below. Follow them carefully and PLEASE email me if you have any questions. Email:
[email protected] This assignment will count as a
project grade
. DUE DATE
= Friday, September 16
→
You can turn it in before this date, but NO late work will be accepted.
September 16 is the absolute LAST day
I will accept assignments. 1. First,
before
reading
A History of the World in Six Glasses,
define the “Five Themes” of Geography (
Movement, Place, Location, Region, and HumanEnvironment Interaction) AND
include a picture/image for each theme. a) Use the following websites to find the definitions –
write them in your own words
: http://www.brighthubeducation.com/helpwithgeography/475395themesofgeographyexamples/ http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/global/themes/geography/index.cfm
* When opening the link, be sure to click “control” and then click the link. b) Please type the themes and their definitions in a list. c) Use Google Images to find an image/picture for
each
theme and copy/paste it next to the corresponding definition. For example, find an image that you think represents “movement” (perhaps a map showing the migration patterns of early humans out of Eastern Africa or a picture of a school bus taking children to school). Do this for each theme. There is no one correct image for any theme. 2. Next, for
each
of the “Five Themes” of Geography, find an historical example from
Six Glasses

that you think demonstrates or explains that particular theme. For each example you find, write a paragraph that answers this question: How does the event from the book
Six Glasses
illustrate/explain the theme you’re discussing?
You will write a paragraph of no more than 1012 sentences answering this question for
each
of the Five Themes. You will have
5
paragraphs total. *For example: In my paragraph on “Movement,” I could write about how a certain beverage was first consumed in one area and then spread to others through trade. For “Location,” I could write about how a place’s relative location made it possible to produce a certain beverage. a) At the beginning of each paragraph, state the theme that you’re discussing. b) You must clearly and thoroughly explain each example from the book that you use to demonstrate the geographical themes. Explain it like you’re writing to someone who has not read
Six Glasses
. c) Type these paragraphs below the definitions you completed for #1. d) Your paragraphs do NOT have to tie together into a formal essay. 3. You will need to familiarize yourself with the location and names of the key regions of the world. You can find a map depicting these regions on page 22 of the AP World History course outline at: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/repository/AP_WorldHistoryCED_Effective
_Fall_2011.pdf. *Remember to click “control” and then click the link to open it. Come to class ready to identify the regions on a map of the world! Mrs. Hall *I will check my email when possible over the summer, so feel free to email me questions at
[email protected] about the reading/assignment and I will respond as promptly as possible. Enjoy your summer I’ll see you in September!
