74 Global Disparities Global Disparities Where Bangalore do earthquakes – A City of Growth and volcanoes occur? Bangalore is the capital of the federal state Karnataka and is located in central southern India. Its impressive growth is mainly due to the location, concentration and boom of the information technology industry (IT industry). Effects of Globalisation M1 Modern Bangalore – IT district Globalisation has led to the settlement of many well-known international IT companies. This development has caused many positive changes in the city of Bangalore, such as the construction of business buildings, shopping malls, and modern apartment blocks. However, a large part of the population still lives in nearby slums. M3 Rush hour in Bangalore Before globalisation enhanced the growth of the IT industry in Bangalore, the government of India had already chosen this region as a location for the electronics industry. Defense research institutions, as well as government owned companies were the first to settle in the area. They turned this area into an ideal location for other related manufacturing industries, such as companies producing car parts, electronic components, and a variety of precision engineering products. Problems of growth The government had not foreseen that this economic growth, as well as the increase in population would very soon lead to severe problems in urban life. As a consequence, the infrastructure could not cope with the increasing demand for adequate housing and transportation. The power supply became an additional problem. To overcome these problems, the city of Bangalore is making plans for a more attractive city, based on the positive effects of the IT industry. Key terms: – car parts – demand – electronic components – infrastructure – IT industry M2 Bangalore – land use – manufacturing industry – power supply – precision engineering M4 Bangalore IT exports Bangalore traffic problems A few rounds in Bangalore’s city centre on a motorised rickshaw leaves one’s shirt darkened with soot and one’s eyes stinging from exhaust fumes. The evening rush hour routinely spirals into complete gridlock with countless thousands of mopeds, jitney buses and cars congesting the road. The German firm Siemens recently halted its plan to expand in Bangalore and the head of its Indian operations, Jürgen Schubert, says the company is instead looking to expand in Puna, Chennai (Madras) or Calcutta. Meanwhile, poor people from the countryside continue to flood into the city of 6 million looking for work. But all too often, they wind up in the slums.
