Dear future AP Biology student, I am looking forward to working with you all this upcoming school year to discuss, think and explore the science of living things. I’ve prepared a few things for you to do that will help you brush up on some topics that you have learned in high school biology and chemistry. If you don’t recall some of these topics, don’t panic , there will be times throughout the year where we can address any shortcomings and misconceptions you have. You may consult any resource to help you complete these tasks; however, over at https:// openstax.org/details/biology you can find an online biology textbook that can be very useful. Downloading the free PDF version may be the easiest way to use the book. Finally, please complete the following using complete sentences. A complete sentence is a sentence that restates the question with the answer so that I, your teacher, don’t have to fish out this paperwork to grade your answers. Always use complete sentences in this class! Electronegativity 1. Define electronegativity and name the elements that have the highest and second highest electronegativity. Properties of water 2. 3. Describe what it means for a molecule to be polar, and explain why water is a polar molecule. Describe how different types of solutes dissolve in water. Structure and function of biomolecules 4. Create a table outlining the structure and function of each of the four classes of biological macromolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids). Parts of the cell and their functions 5. Draw a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell, labeling and describing the function of each structure. Biochemical reactions 6. What role do enzymes play in biochemical reactions? Catabolic pathways and redox reactions 7. What is a redox reaction? Would photosynthesis and/or cellular respiration be considered a redox reaction? Mitosis vs. meiosis 8. Create a table comparing (and contrasting) mitosis and meiosis. Genetics (Heredity) 9. Cystic fibrosis is a recessive genetic disorder. What are the chances (in percent) of a healthy couple who are both heterozygous for the trait of having a child with cystic fibrosis? Support your claim with a punnet square. DNA Structure and function 10. Draw and label a model of DNA. 11. What is the function of DNA and how does it fulfill this function? 12. Why do cells carry out DNA replication? From gene to protein 13. What is the purpose of transcription? 14. What molecules are involved in the process of translation? Process of natural selection 15. Describe natural selection using the words adaptation (n.), fitness and reproduce.
