Greek Creation Myth Questions 1. Cronus swallowed each of his children as they were born to ensure that one would not kill him. 2. The youngest child of Rhea and Cronus was Zeus. To save him, she gave Cronus a rock wrapped in a blanket. He ate it thinking it was Zeus. Rhea gave birth to Zeus in a cave and gave Zeus to Gaea to make sure he would be raised without Cronus knowing he was alive. 3. Zeus saved his siblings by giving his father a potion which made him vomit them up. Zeus then banished his father to the ends of the earth. 4. The Titans and Gods were fighting because they were upset that their brother was banished. 5. They battled for 10 years. 6. The Cyclopes gave Zeus his mighty thunderbolt. 7. The Cyclopes, the Monsters, and the other Gods helped Zeus battle the Titans. 8. Zeus punished the Titans by chaining them up and throwing them into the depths of the earth. 9. Atlas’ punishment was to hold up the earth/heavens forever. 10. Menoetius’ punishment was to have Atlas stand on his back for eternity. 11. Zeus’ area of the world to control was the earth and sky. He made his home on Mt. Olympus. 12. Poseidon was supreme god of the seas and oceans. 13. Hades was in charge of the Underworld (where all dead people go). 14. Hera married Zeus and became goddess of marriage and childbirth. 15. This was ironic because Zeus was a cheater (a playa!). 16. Demeter became goddess of harvests and crops. 17. Hestia became goddess of hearth (fireplace) and family. 18. The children of Zeus and Hera were Ares and Hephaestus. Ares was the god of war and was angry and nasty. Hephaestus was the god of blacksmiths and the forge. He was the only “ugly” god and was deformed. 19. Athena’s parents were Metis (wisdom) and Zeus. Zeus ate Metis and Athena came out of his head fully grown and wearing armour. She is the goddess of wisdom (and war too). 20. Apollo (boy) and Artemis (girl) are the twin gods. Their parents are Zeus and Leto. Apollo is the god of music and light. Artemis is the goddess of the moon and the hunt. 21. Hermes is the messenger of the gods. His parents are Maia and Zeus. 22. Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty. Her parents are Dione and Zeus. 23. Dionysis’ parents are Semele (a human) and Zeus. He is the god of wine and merriment.
