Alien Periodic Table Activity Mrs. Martin spent the summer communicating with an alien a distant planet. The planet is composed of the same elements as Earth. From the data sent, she translated their periodic table into English, but the names of the elements and their symbols were different. Since alien scientist doesn’t know the names of our elements, he radioed the following data on the known properties of the elements. Due to summer time constraints, Mrs. Martin was unable to obtain the information on the transition or inner transition elements. List of the element names and symbols from the alien planet. Andrew (An) Goldy (G) Quinn (Q) Avery (A) Hiram (Hi) Ralph (R) Bob (Bo) Jefferson (J) Sassy (Ss) Brett (Bt) Kandi (Ki) Ton (T) Chuck (Ch) Logan (L) Uma (Ua) Dennis (D) Malcolm (M) Victoria (V) Donald (Do) Nancy (Nc) Wilbur (Wi) Elroy (El) Oz (Oz) Xavier (X) Ernest (E) Piper (Pi) Ying (Yg) Foxxy (Fx) Prof (Pf) Zeb (Z) 1. The noble gases are Bob (Bo), Wilbur (Wi), Jefferson (J) and Logan (L). Bob (Bo) is a noble gas but does not have 8 valence electrons. The outside energy level of Logan (L) is its second energy level. Of these noble gases, Wilbur (Wi) has the greatest atomic mass. 2. The alkali metals are Xavier (X), Brett (Bt), Chuck (Ch), and Quinn (Q). Of these alkali metals, Chuck (Ch) has the lowest atomic mass. Quinn (Q) is in the same period as Wilbur (Wi). 3. The halogens are Avery (A), Victoria (V), and Kandi (Ki). Victoria (V) is in the same period as Quinn (Q) and Wilbur (Wi). 4. The metalloids are Ernest (E), Hiram (Hi), Ton (T) and Sassy (Ss). Sassy (Ss) is the metalloid with the highest atomic mass. Ernest (E) is the metalloid with the lowest atomic mass. Hiram (Hi) and Ton (T) are in group 14. Ton (T) has more protons than Hiram (Hi). The element called Ying (Yg) is a metalloid by location but has properties that suggest it is a light metal. 5. The most metallic element on the planet is called Xavier (X). The most chemically active nonmetal on the planet is called Avery (A). The lightest element on the planet is called Prof (Pf). The heaviest element on the planet is Elroy (El). It is highly reactive. 6. The chemical makeup of the alien planet’s oceans seems to be about the same as Earth’s oceans. When seawater is distilled, the liquid that is boiled off and then condensed has been shown to have molecules consisting of two atoms of Prof (Pf) and one atom of Nancy (Nc). The solid left behind after the distillation consists mainly of a crystal made up of the elements Brett (Bt) and Kandi (Ki). 7. The chemical called Dennis (D) has only 4 protons in its atom. 8. Foxxy (Fx) is a black crystal and has 4 electrons in its outermost energy level. Both Ralph (R) and Donald (Do) have atoms with four energy levels. But Ralph (R) is less metallic than Donald (Do). 9. Malcolm (M), Goldy (G) and Sassy (Ss) are all members of Group 15. Goldy (G) has fewer total electrons than Malcolm (M). 10.Uma (Ua), Oz (Oz) and Nancy (Nc) all gain 2 electrons. Nancy (Nc) is diatomic. Oz (Oz) has a lower atomic number than Uma (Ua). 11.The element Andrew (An) tends to lose 3 electrons. The elements Zeb (Z) and Piper (Pi) both lose electrons. Piper (Pi) loses them from its fifth energy level, while Zeb (Z) loses them form its third.
