This ‘theatre in a house’ was created in 1961 by Patric and Rosalie Carey when they extended the
living room of their house in London Street into an auditorium, converting it into a small, 30
seat theatre which they called The Globe. This was later modified into the 72 seat theatre which
exists today. The original house is a fine example of 19 th century domestic architecture, having
been designed by and built for Dunedin’s first mayor, William Mason, in the 1860s.
The Careys were active in promoting both classical and new theatre to Dunedin
audiences and also the works of New Zealand playwrights such as James K Baxter. The Careys
moved from the Globe in 1973 but the theatre and its traditions continue, under the care of the
Incorporated Society known as the Friends of the Globe Theatre. The Globe is now an amateur
theatre, dependent for its survival on the continuing efforts of volunteers, its many Friends, who
help stage an average of about five or six productions each year. Some are classical –
Shakespeare is a favourite of course - others are gems of the more modern European and
American theatre. The Globe is also producing even more of the works of New Zealand writers,
a number of whom are Dunedin-based.
The Friends are also much involved with the preservation of the original house, one of
only a few of its kind remaining in this area. The importance of both the house and the theatrical
work of the Careys and the Friends of the Globe has been recognised by the New Zealand
Historic Places Trust which now lists the Globe Theatre as a Category I historic building.
While the theatrical environment in Dunedin has changed considerably since the 1960s,
the wishes of many people to see and/or participate in amateur theatre which is produced to
high standards has not changed. If you too would like to become involved in the workings of
this theatre in any capacity, on stage, behind the scenes, in the conservation of the building - or
simply as an audience member who is given a discount on admission, we would be delighted to
welcome you as a Friend of the Globe.
