Cape Breton Highlands National Park
Natural Wonders & Cultural Treasures
The Cape Breton Highlands are the most striking feature of northern Cape Breton, with steep
cliffs and deep river canyons carving into a forested plateau bordering the Atlantic Ocean. One
third of the Cabot trail, a world-famous scenic highway, runs through the national park along
the coasts and over the highlands.
Established in 1936, the National Park covers 950 square kilometres, protecting about 20% of
northern Cape Breton. It’s one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Nova Scotia and is
part of a system of national parks protecting outstanding Canadian landscapes.
The cool maritime climate and rugged landscape of the Cape Breton highlands permit a unique
blend of habitats for plants and animals and are also home to three different types of forest:
Acadian, Boreal and Taiga. This special mix of northern and southern species is not found
anywhere else in Canada.
Within the park, several dozen species of rare or threatened plants and animals can also be
found, along with small populations of arctic-alpine plants left over from the last ice age.
Conservation:
Cape Breton Highlands National Park is a diverse ecosystem that serves as home to a wide array
of plant and animal life. The well-being of these habitats is maintained by a delicate natural
environment, with lakes, rivers and soils playing a crucial role in keeping the park ecosystem
healthy. Parks Canada also takes a leading role in maintaining nature’s balance through projects
and initiatives that preserve and protect these elements of Canada’s natural geography.
Visitor Activities:
Cape Breton Highlands National Park is filled with outdoor adventure! Get up close and
