“Stand and unfold yourself!”
Performing Shakespeare’s text
Autumn Lectures 2012
The interpretation of Shakespeare’s text from
a theatrical perspective: how it is conceived for
performance, how it is brought to life in the rehearsal
room, and how it is transformed by the actor’s
imagination.
Tuesday 23 October
Professor Frances Young
Methodist Minister and retired
Professor of Theology
What is the difference
between a Sacred and a
Secular text? Should we read
them the same way?
Literary methods have always been employed in
biblical interpretation, from the early centuries to
modern scholarship. Yet hearing the Bible read in a
corporate liturgical context is surely different from
curling up with a novel on one’s own. This lecture will
endeavour to clarify the similarities and differences
between interpreting sacred texts and reading texts
as literature.
Tuesday 30 October
Professor Terry Eagleton
Distinguished Visiting Professor
of English at Lancaster University
and at the University of Notre
Dame, USA
What do we mean by the sacred, how far can it be
distinguished from the secular? What is meant by
textuality and interpretation? The bearing of this
on the question of fundamentalism will also be
discussed.
Can There Be Sacred Texts?
Lectures start at 7.30pm
in Wells Cathedral
Each lecture is usually followed by
questions and discussion.
