Resolution Commemorating the 60th Anniversary
of our National Motto
WHEREAS, the official motto of the United States of America is AIn God We Trust@, and
WHEREAS, the Star Spangled Banner, our national anthem, written by Francis Scott Key in 1814, states,
Apraise the power that hath made and preserved us as a nation, and this be our motto: AIn God We Trust@,
and
WHEREAS, in 1873, Congress passed the Coinage Act, granting that the Secretary of the Treasury shall
inscribe the nation=s coinage with the motto AIn God We Trust@, and
WHEREAS, on July 30, 1956, President Eisenhower signed legislation that is now known as The United
States Code, 36 U.S.C. ' 302, officially establishing the national motto of the United States of America to
be AIn God We Trust@, and
WHEREAS, in 2006, on the 50th anniversary of its adoption, the U.S. Senate reaffirmed the official
national motto, and in 2011, on the 55th anniversary of its adoption, the U.S. House of Representatives
reaffirmed the official national motto, and
WHEREAS, July 30, 2016 marks the 60th Anniversary of the adoption and signing of this legislation by
President Eisenhower, and the official establishment of the national motto of the United States of
America, as AIn God We Trust@.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the County Board of Ogle County, State of Illinois on this 19th
day of July, 2016, that the Ogle County Board reaffirms the official motto of the United States of America,
as AIn God We Trust@, and supports and encourages the public display of the National Motto throughout
Ogle County.
FURTHER, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Ogle County Board, that July 30, 2016, be recognized throughout
all of Ogle County, as a day of commemoration of this historic anniversary, and encourage Ogle County
residents to join in this commemoration, as they personally desire.
