Earth’s Movements The moon revolves around the Earth- The Earth revolves around the sun! Rotation: Spinning of an object on an axis. Rotation causes the Earth to have night and day. How long does it take the Earth to rotate once? o 24 hours or 1 day Revolution: As Earth spins it orbits around the sun. It follows the same path around the sun called its orbit. Why are there 365 days in a year? o The Earth spins 365 times as we revolve around the sun. How long does it take Earth to revolve once? o One year or 365 days What an axis? An axis is an imaginary line through the Earth. Imagine a line going through the middle of the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole. This axis allows the Earth to spin the same way every time. Earth’s Tilt: Earth does not rotate straight up and down. Earth is slightly tilted. We have seasons because of the Earth’s tilt. When the sun is pointed toward a hemisphere, it is having summer. When the sun is pointed away from a hemisphere, it is having winter. What would happen if the Earth was tilted even more on its side? o It would cause more hours of sunlight during summer and less hours of sunlight during winter. How does Earth stay in orbit? o The earth stays in orbit with the force of gravity. o It acts like an invisible string holding it in place. The Sun Our sun is a star located at the center of our Solar System. It is a huge, spinning ball of hot gas that lights up the Earth and provides us with heat. All the planets in the solar system revolve around the sun. Earth The third planet from the sun. Earth has one moon. It is the only planet known the support life. Earth takes 24 hours or 1 day to rotate once. Earth takes 365 days or 1 year to revolve once around the sun. The Earth has seasons because it rotates on its axis. Other Objects in the Solar System Asteroid: A rocky object orbiting the sun between the planets. Meteor: A piece of rock or dust from space burning up in Earth’s air. Meteorite: A rock from space that passed through Earth’s air and landed on the ground. Comet: A frozen chunk of ice and dust that orbits the sun.
