FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS
International Conference of the ArchaeoBioCenterLMU Munich and the
Research Unit ‘Transalpine Mobility and Cultural Transfer’
of the German Research Foundation (DFG-FOR 1670)
CREMATION BURIALS IN EUROPE BETWEEN THE 2ND MILL. B.C. AND THE 4TH C. A.D.
ARCHAEOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to announce an international conference on
Cremation Burials in Europe between the 2nd Mill. B.C. and the 4th c. A.D.
Archaeology and Anthropology
It is the 2nd conference within the Research Unit ‘Transalpine Mobility and Cultural Transfer’ (FOR 1670)
financed by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The unit deals with the establishment of an isotopic
fingerprint for bioarchaeological finds, especially cremations, and its application to archaeological and
cultural-historical problems from the Late Bronze Age up to Roman Times.
The international conference provides an opportunity to present new, especially interdisciplinary research
on cremations in Prehistoric and Roman Europe. We would like to invite speakers who address
archaeological as well as anthropological analyzes which relate to the focus of our Research Unit. In our
meeting we will discuss case studies or overarching analyzes on various cultural contexts from the Bronze
Age to Late Antiquity.
Location:
St. Markus-Church
Gabelsbergerstr. 6, 80333 München
Date of the conference:
3rd - 5th October 2017
Deadline for paper and poster proposals
& abstracts:
1st November 2016
The main emphasis will be put on the following aspects:
Ritual aspects in dealing with cremated individuals from an archaeological and an anthropological
perspective:
In combining archaeological and anthropological analyses this section will focus on ritual practices in regard
to cremated individuals and their cultural context. The relationship between age and gender and ritual
practices, deliberate culturally determined selection mechanisms - for example the quantitative selection of
cremated bones in a funeral context - or other specific manipulations in dealing with cremated remains will
form some thematic focus areas.
Evidence for migration and mobility in communities practicing cremation:
This session focusses on the evaluation of archaeological finds in combination with anthropological analyses
and methodology addressing questions of migration and mobility in communities practicing the burial ritual
of cremation. It will provide a forum to discuss new analytical methods, ranging from case studies on isotope
analyses of cremated bones to other interdisciplinary approaches.
Further information:
The conference will be held in German and English. In case you will be sending a German abstract, please
provide an English translation of the title of your paper and a short English version of the German abstract.
Lectures should be no more than 20 minutes long.
Posters are welcome - there will be a brief poster session during the conference.
We intend to publish a monograph on the conference proceedings.
Conference fees, travel expenses as well as accommodation costs for participants with an accepted paper
will be covered by the organizers - details will be announced with the 2nd Call for Papers.
Conference fees for participants with an accepted poster will be covered as well; unfortunately we will not
be able to compensate the travelling costs of poster presenters.
