A-LEVEL BIOLOGY A-LEVEL BIOLOGY WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW TO BE ABLE TO DO BEFORE TAKING THIS COURSE? • To have studied GCSE Science at Higher Tier and gained grades BB or above in Core and Additional Science. • Students studying Triple Science must achieve a minimum of a grade B in Biology and grades B and C in the other two Science disciplines. • To have studied GCSE Mathematics at Intermediate or Higher Tier and have gained a Grade B or above. • To have studied GCSE English Language and gained a grade C or above. WHAT WILL I LEARN ON THIS COURSE? Students will be able to: • Develop a greater understanding of biological ideas and be able to apply their knowledge to novel problems. • Develop their practical, communication, research and study skills. • Appreciate the importance of biological ideas in society and an awareness of developments in Biology in the millennium. • To appreciate the complexity and diversity of life. WHAT KIND OF STUDENTS IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR? • You should have an interest in the study of living organisms and the environment they live in. • Enjoy carrying out practical investigations in the laboratory or in the ‘field’. • Interested in the development of new technology, such as medicine, genetic engineering and biotechnology. • Want to use Biology to support other AS/A Levels in Psychology, Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, PE and Health and Social Care. • Biology, Chemistry and two other A Levels could be done as a precursor to studying Medicine. WHAT COULD I GO ON TO DO AT THE END OF THIS COURSE? • Follow a degree course in Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Immunology, Environmental Sciences, Veterinary Science, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Psychology and Pharmacy. • Enter a Higher National Diploma in Biological Science and related programmes. • Enter employment in Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Catering, Land Management, Environmental Health, Leisure Management and Health Related Fitness. • Follow a teacher training programme. All students intending to take AS Levels at Bosworth Academy will be expected to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at A*- C in at least 5 different subjects including English Language and Maths. Some departments also require particular grades for subjects. The grade requirement for this subject is: BB in Core and Additional Science or grade B in Biology and grade B and C in the other two science disciplines if you are studying Triple Science. In addition to Science grades, students must also attain a minimum of a grade C in English and a grade B or above Maths.
