Research Scientist Position
Dissemination and Implementation Science
The Division of Research of The Permanente Medical Group (Kaiser Permanente Northern
California) seeks a mid-career or senior investigator with a focus in dissemination and
implementation science. This individual will be expected to develop an independently-funded
research program, conduct scholarly research that is recognized nationally and internationally,
and collaborate with other Division of Research investigators and Kaiser Permanente clinicians
and operational leadership to lead research regarding the adoption of evidence-based
approaches to implementation in clinical and health system operations.
The Division of Research is located in the heart of the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area,
occupying a five-story office building in downtown Oakland, in close proximity to organizational
headquarters for Kaiser Permanente. Investigators in the Division of Research draw on rich
clinical data derived from a comprehensive state-of-the-art electronic medical record and
associated clinical and administrative databases, and enjoy direct access to a diverse
population of >3.8 million members afforded by its location within Kaiser Permanente Northern
California. The Division of Research has more than 50 research scientists who lead research
programs in cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, health care delivery and policy,
behavioral health and aging, infectious diseases, and women’s and children’s health. DOR
investigators are supported primarily by grant and contract funding from federal and other
external peer-reviewed sources, especially the National Institutes of Health.
The placement of the Division of Research within one of the oldest and largest integrated health
care delivery systems in the US enhances the ability to conduct dissemination and
implementation research. The Division of Research has been increasing its capacity to conduct
comparative effectiveness and delivery science research. It supports a Delivery Science
Fellowship program to train early-stage investigators in this area and encourages participation in
workshops to increase capacity to conduct dissemination and implementation research. In
addition, the Division of Research participates in the Health Care Systems Research Network,
providing the opportunity to conduct research in partner research organizations affiliated with
health care systems. It is also a participant in research networks that focus on addictions and
substance abuse, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental health, vaccine safety, and
other areas – each of which provide the opportunity for dissemination and implementation
research in Kaiser Permanente and other settings. Opportunities for collaboration exist with
area academic health centers such as UCSF, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and Stanford University,
and Division of Research scientists collaborate with scientists at these and other institutions
across the nation.
This Research Scientist position calls for relevant experience and research expertise in
dissemination and implementation science. The specific areas in which the successful
candidate may work should complement content areas of interest to Division of Research
investigators and willingness to work with Kaiser Permanente Northern California clinical and
operations leaders. The successful candidate is expected to develop his or her own externallyfunded research portfolio, work with other DOR scientists on complementary research projects,
collaborate with physicians and program leaders within Kaiser Permanente, and develop
national and international collaborations to advance research in their respective topic area.
