 Literary devices in ‘Exposure’ Complete the table below. Part of it has been completed as a guide. Device Example(s) from poem Effect Personification: the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something non-­‐human. Alliteration: the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. ‘Our brains ache, in the merciless iced east winds that knive us…’ ‘Sudden successive flights of bullets streak the silence.’ Mimics the sound of bullets streaking past. Simile: a figure of speech that directly compares two things, often connecting them with ‘like’ or ‘as’. Repetition: the simple repeating of a word in order to secure emphasis. Rhetorical question: asked in order to produce an effect or to make a statement rather than to elicit information.
