An Angel Helps Peter Escape from Prison
(Story from Acts 12:1-11 CEV)
Our story takes place when King Herod was in charge. King Herod was not a very nice man,
in fact he was mean to people who loved Jesus. That’s not nice, is it? Put your hand on top
of your head if you think we should be nice to people. (Wait until all the children have a
hand on top of their heads) You’re right! We are supposed to be nice to people, but King
Herod didn’t listen to God.
So, King Herod decided he was going to arrest Peter for telling people how much Jesus
loved them. He had his guards put Peter in jail. King Herod did not want Peter to escape
from jail so he put heavy chains, like the toy handcuffs I showed you earlier, but they were
real handcuffs, not toys. And he had 16 guards watching him. That’s a lot of guards! Let’s
count to 16 together. (Count with the children) Great job! While Peter was in jail, he prayed
for God to rescue him. Peter wasn’t the only one praying; other people who loved Jesus
were also praying for God to rescue him! Something amazing happened the night before
Peter was to go to trial. As he lay asleep with heavy chains on him with a guard on each
side of him, all of a sudden the cell was filled with a bright light! God had sent an angel to
rescue Peter! At first Peter thought this was a dream, but the angel from the Lord woke him
up and said, “Peter, wake up, get dressed and follow me.” Peter did exactly what the angel
of the Lord told him to do. Before he got dressed, Peter noticed that the heavy chains had
fallen off and he was free. He put his coat on and followed the angel right out of the jail cell,
down the hall, and through the gate and out of the city. When they were no longer in the
city, the angel disappeared. When the angel of the Lord disappeared, Peter knew it wasn’t a
dream. He was free! God had rescued him from jail and from King Herod! Peter was in a
really tough spot. He decided to pray to God for help. Peter knew that God would listen to
his prayer and that God wants to help us in times of trouble. God wants us to pray too. He
listens to our prayers, and He wants to help us with all our needs.
Review:
Use the following questions to review the lesson with the children.
Question 1: Who put Peter in jail? (King Herod)
Question 2: Why did King Herod put Peter in jail? (Because he told people that Jesus loved
them)
Question 3: How many guards were around Peter? (16)
Question 4: Who led Peter out of jail? (An angel of the Lord)
Question 5: What should we do if we need help? (Pray to God)
Memory Verse:
Introduce today’s verse to the children by saying it with them several times. Make it a
competition between the girls and boys if you want. Add hand motions and changing
inflection to make the verse come alive. Explain what the verse means to the kids.

Heavy Chains
Lesson Tie-In:
Today we heard how God sent an angel of the Lord to free Peter from jail. Peter prayed for
God to rescue him and so did other people who love Jesus. All of the people who prayed
believed that God was ready to rescue Peter. This paper chain will remind us that we can
pray to God and He will hear our prayers. He is ready to help us with all our needs.
Materials: Construction paper and glue
Directions:
1. Cut strips of construction paper 1” x 6” at least 10 per child.
2. Give children at least 10 strips of construction paper.
3. Show children how to glue into paper chain to represent the heavy chains Peter wore
in jail.

PRAY
Dear Jesus, Thank You for hearing my prayers. Please help me to remember to pray for
others, just like Peter’s friends prayed for him. Thank you for always being ready to help me
with my needs. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
GAME
Angel Says
Materials:
None
Preparation:
None
How to Play:
Like “Simon Says,” one person is chosen to be the "Angel" the others stand in a straight
line. The angel then calls out an action for the children to follow. It can be anything like....
touch your toes, jump 10 times on 1 foot... The angel when giving an action can simply state
the action by itself..."touch your ears" and whoever does it is out and has to sit down. Or the
angel can say "Angel says, touch your ears" and then everyone must follow the instruction.
You can vary the actions according to the age group of children you are playing with. The
last person who is standing can then be the "Angel."
Lesson Tie In:
The “Playing Angel Says” game made me feel like I was Peter right before he was freed
from Jail. God heard Peter’s prayers and the prayers of other people who loved Jesus. God
answered all the prayers and sent the Angel to free him. Peter listened to the angel, just like
you listened as we played our game!
