St. Peter’s KeyNews!
June 15, 2016
New service time begins this Sunday! The 10:15 service moves to 9:30 a.m. through Labor Day weekend. The
8:00 service remains at the same time. Friday Nite Rites is each Friday from 6:30 p.m.to 7:15 p.m. It is a
Eucharist service and uses the Sunday readings and collect. You have options for worship each weekend at St.
Peter’s!
Lemonade in the Shade begins Sunday after the 9:30 service. However, we do not have a host for this week!
This is easy and simple… Lemonade and cookies or fruit. You can set-up in the corner of the parking lot under
the shade tree by the church or in the parish hall if you prefer. For questions and/or to offer to host one of the
Sundays during the summer, please email Sue at [email protected] or call 973-334-4429.
Our thanks to Cathy and John Garrison for their hospitality last Sunday. We had beautiful weather for the
outdoor service and picnic, with a huge crowd of 120. Thanks to our choir and to Sal for beautiful music.
Thanks also to Fred Osborne for grilling the burgers and hotdogs as well as to all who prepared and brought
food to share. The table and chair team of John Garrison, Jim Muhaw, Don MacGowan, Ray Rogers, Stephen
Shaw, Jerry Watkins, Jeff Anderson, Garrett Sylvester and Darlene Hart-Sylvester hauled, set up and brought
everything back to the church. We had a lovely service by the pond and a great time being together!
The vestry meets tomorrow evening, Thursday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m.
A Memorial Service for Iola Hitt will be held on Saturday, June 25 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s. Iola had moved
to California to be near family a few years ago. She lived to be 97 years old and was a veteran of the U.S. Army
(WWII) and an author. A reception will be held in our Parish Hall following the service.
Update on the Mozambican students: Nearly four years ago St. Peter’s undertook a remarkable Outreach
opportunity to send three outstanding young students in Mozambique to college. Parishioner David Marshall,
who served in the Peace Corps there as a teacher, appealed to St. Peter’s to support these students financially
to enable them to continue their educations beyond high school. We committed to the endeavor. Now, seveneighths of the way through their college educations St. Peter’s needs to raise just about $1400 more to
complete this mission. Alberto, a math major, will spend his last semester in Sweden on a scholarship he has
earned from his university in Mozambique, with just minor expenses for us to cover. Antonio (journalism
major) and Eugenio (Pre-med) will still need full funding. Please answer this last call as generously as you can
and note “Mozambique students” in the memo line on your check. Our financial assistance for these students
has been transformative! Over the last several years all three have expressed their gratitude to God and to St.
Peter’s for this life-changing assistance. Sincere thanks to all who have already and/or will now Join In and
Reach Out to these promising young men by donating to the completion of their college educations.
YACs in Action: June 27-30! Painting, Playing and Fence-Building is on the agenda for our week of mission
work with the theme: “ALL ARE NEIGHBORS TO US.” The theme comes from a hymn “Jesu, Jesu,” which
reminds us that Jesus called us to serve neighbors both near and far. All middle and high school YACs are
asked to meet in our Parish Hall at 9:00 a.m. each day for our daily work schedule and prayers for our work.
We will return to the church by 4 p.m. each day. Monday and Tuesday, we will be painting homes of people in
need in our area; Wednesday the 29th, we are planning a trip to Dorney Park; Thursday, the 30 th, the youth
from St. Pius will join us as we construct a fence for the Serenity Garden of the Mental Health Association in
Morris Plains. The staff and clients tend the organic vegetables in this garden which are given to the Food
Bank. Please let Adele know if you or your youth can participate on all or any of the dates.
One of our YACs, Elena Messick is collecting new or gently used school supplies for adults in need who are
trying to continue their education. She is willing to pick up from you or you may drop off at St. Peter's. Please
email Elena at [email protected].
We pray for the victims of the hate crime in Orlando and for their families. Giver of Life and Love, you
created all people as one family and called us to live together in harmony and peace. Surround us with your
love as we face the challenges and tragedies of gun violence. Bind up the wounds of all who suffer from gun
violence, those maimed and disfigured, those left alone and grieving, and those who struggle to get through
one more day. Bless them with your presence and help them find hope. God Who Remembers, may we not
forget those who have died in the gun violence that we have allowed to become routine. Receive them into
your heart and comfort us with your promise of eternal love and care. God of Justice, help us, your church,
find our voice. Empower us to change this broken world. Give us power to rise above our fear that nothing can
be done and grant us the conviction to advocate for change. Loving God, make us instruments of your peace.
All this we pray in the name of the One who offered his life so that we might live, Jesus the Christ. Amen.
(Taken from a litany written by The Rt. Rev. Stephen Lane, Episcopal Bishop of Maine).
Peace and Blessings,
