Wednesday 9/19/12
What fraction of a dollar is ten cents?
What fraction of a dollar is 25 cents?
What fraction of a dollar is 50 cents?
What fraction of a dollar is 75 cents?
If you are given an amount of money in cents, how
can you find the fraction of a dollar it represents
in simplest form?
Terminating and Repeating Decimals
3.1B
Terminating Decimals-is a decimal with digits
that end
Repeating Decimals-have a pattern in their digits
that repeat forever.
You can use bar notation to indicate that a
number pattern repeats indefinitely.
Any fraction can be written as a decimal by
dividing its numerator by its denominator.
Every terminating decimal can be written as a
fraction with a denominator of 10, 100, 1000
etc.
Write each number as a decimal.
Use bar notation if it repeats
Work Problems on board

mixed number in simplest form.

2. 5 2/3
• Write the decimal as a fraction or mixed
number
1. -.22
2. 4. 87
Compare and Order Rational Numbers
3.1 C
Rational Number-is a number that can be
expressed as a ration of 2 integers expressed
as a fraction, in which the denominator
cannot be 0.
Common denominator- is the common multiple
of the denominators of 2 or more fractions.
Least common denominator (LCD)-is the LCM of
the denominators.
• Not all numbers are rational numbers. For
example the greek letter pi is an irrational
number. 3.14….
• Irrational numbers are numbers that go
forever with no pattern.
Compare using <, >, and =

• Compare: 6 2/3 and 6.5
Add and Subtract Like Fractions
• Fractions that have the same denominator are
called like fractions
Add or subtract and write each in
simplest form.

Add and Subtract unlike Fractions
3.2 C
Before you can add unlike fractions, or fractions
with different denominators, you must find a
common denominator.
Add or subtract. Write in simplest
form.
