AUTOLOGOUS SERUM EYES DROPS Autologous drops for treating Allergies and Dry Eye Syndrome EYE ALLERGIES When eyes come into contact with certain compounds which the immune system (in charge of defending the body) recognises as foreign, an allergic reaction occurs. The response is the release of histamine, a chemical substance which causes irritation, reddening, burning and watering in the eye and can even damage the cornea in severe cases. The most common causes of these allergies are very common allergens such as dust, pollen, animal hair and feathers; cosmetics, make-up, contact lenses, environmental pollution, etc. DRY EYE SYNDROME Some people do not produce tears of the quality or amount needed to keep the eye healthy and trouble-free. This abnormal situation is known as dry eye syndrome. Dry eye is defined as a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface and tears, whose main symptoms are eye discomfort, impaired vision and an unstable tear film, the last of which damages the ocular surface and makes it difficult to use contact lenses. DIAGNOSIS • Secretory Immunoglobulins A and E in • tears. The levels of these drop when tear production is stimulated, irritating the eye. Tear Osmolarity. Currently the most reliable objective measure for diagnosing a dry eye. TREATMENT The Ophthalmological Reference Unit is equipped to prepare autologous eye drops in sterile conditions using the serum of the patient, for treating Allergies and Dry Eye. Because they are autologous, these drops do not cause the possible irritations or rejections experienced with conventional eye drops on the market. The preparation of this sterile eye drop using autologous serum does not present technical problems if the right equipment is used. In addition, a microbiological culture of the preparations is carried out to ensure the conditions are sterile. SAMPLE: 10 mL of serum per drop RECOMMENDATIONS The eye drop must be kept in the freezer until it is used. It must be kept refrigerated once the container has been opened and has a shelf-life of 3 weeks. Never leave it at room temperature UNIDAD DE REFERENCIA OFTALMOLÓGICA Análisis Clínicos Sabater Paseo Bonanova, 67-69 Sótano -1 Barcelona Teléfono: 93 253 01 49
