Distribute a sheet of the words from the sort to the students. Discuss what they
notice about the words and gather their ideas on how the words could be sorted.
Students will notice that many of the words end in -ion. Explain that they will be
exploring the suffix -ion and what happens when it is added to base words. Then use
headers and begin to model the sort. Begin by sorting the base words by final letters
(ct and ss). Then match the affixed word to the base. Discuss how the final -ct and the
final -ss acquire the sound /sh/ when -ion is added. Make sure that students recognize
that the spelling of the base word is not changed when -ion is added to words with final
-ct and final -ss. Also explain that -ion means “the act or result” of the meaning of the
base word (e.g. the act of subtracting one number from another is subtraction).
1.1 – Easiest word list (Recommended for intermediate)
1.2- Average word list (Recommended for late intermediate)
1.3- Challenge word list (Recommended for advanced intermediate or middle)
Key



Points:
The final /t/ sound from -ct changes to the sound of /sh/.
The final /s/ sound from -ss also becomes the /sh/ sound.
There is no spelling change when adding -ion to base words that end in -ct or -ss.
