Emerging Voices is presented at the Winchester Street Theatre in historic Cabbagetown from May 24 – 28. Tickets are available via TDT’s online box office. The presentation of Emerging Voices represents the second phase of TDT’s Emerging Voices Project, which began in 2015 with a two-week choreographic development incubator under the mentorship of TDT’s Artistic Director Christopher House and frequent TDT collaborator Ame Henderson. Through such projects TDT demonstrates its commitment to working with guest artists and fostering opportunities for exchange and growth in Toronto’s dance community. “Alicia and Emily are two of the most exciting voices in Toronto’s fertile emerging dance scene. Their work is smart, playful, energetic, and bold and we’re excited to see how their collaboration with TDT continues to evolve,” Christopher House says of working with the pair. Emerging Voices is created in partnership with performers Justin de Luna, Alana Elmer, Yuichiro Inoue, Peter Kelly, Megumi Kokuba, Pulga Muchochoma, Danah Rosales, Jarrett Siddall, and Christianne Ullmark, rehearsal director Rosemary James, outside eye Ame Henderson, musicians Victoria Cheong and Andrew Zukerman, lighting designer Simon Rossiter, stage manager Laura Cournoyea and costume designer Jennifer Dallas. She received a BFA in Dance from York University. Her work in performance, video and installation has been presented in Canada, USA and Europe from stages to swimming pools to abandoned factories to galleries. She is one part of WITCHTITS, a dancing power duo, with Zinzi Buchanan and works in various constellations with other makers in Toronto, Berlin and Zagreb. Alicia’s choreographic work has been presented at XPACE Cultural Centre, Nuit Blanche, Harbourfront Centre, Flowchart, SummerWorks, Rhubarb in Toronto; Usine C in Montréal; Festival of New Dance in St. Johns; Queeristan in Amsterdam; Ponderosa in Stolzenhagen; TANZBAD, ada studio, k77 and Tanztage Festival in Berlin. As a dancer and collaborator, she has worked with Zoja Smutny, Cara Spooner, Isabelle Schad, Shannon Cooney, Robert Kingsbury, Irena Čurik, Bernardo Chatillon and Andrea Spaziani. Alicia has been an artist-in-residence in the Czech Republic, Oregon, California, Zagreb, Stolzenhagen, Berlin and Toronto. She has taught workshops at Université du Québèc á Montréal and Studio 303 (Montréal), Toronto Dance Community Love-In and York University (Toronto), Kinetic Studio Dance (Halifax), Neighbourhood Dance Works (St. John’s), TanzTage (Potsdam), Kelim Choreography Centre (Tel Aviv) and P.O.R.C.H. (Stolzenhagen). She has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Arts Council. Emily Law is a contemporary dancer, street dancer, and emerging choreographer. She graduated from The School of Toronto Dance Theatre and has trained and competed in house dancing and waacking. Emily is a founding member of Mix Mix Dance Collective who will be presenting a new work in the Toronto Theatre Fringe this July, the Toronto house dance crew Warehouse Jacks who are currently facilitating open house dance sessions at the AGO, and Parks N’ Wreck who will be throwing their second festival September 10th as part of the TAC’s Arts in the Parks program. Emily has had the pleasure of working with companies and artists such as: Kaha:wi Dance Theatre, The Dietrich Group, The Chimera Project and Alias Dance Project. Her choreographic work has been showcased in festivals such as:, The Next Stage Theatre Festival, Toronto Fringe Festival, CanAsian Dance Festival, The Reel Asian Film Festival and Guelph Dance. She has been nominated for two Dora Mavor Moore awards and a Gemini.
