EHS Algebra I Proficiency Exam Study Guide Students may not use a calculator and may not use notes on the exam. Students scoring 70% or better on the proficiency exam will be given course credit for Algebra I and will be placed into Geometry in the 9th grade. Please take the exam seriously and review carefully for it. The topics on the exam can be found in typical comprehensive Algebra I textbooks. Students should be able to do the following: v Evaluate Numerical & Algebraic Expressions Ø Apply Order of Operations Rules Ø Operate with Signed Real Numbers § add and subtract § multiply and divide § negate § distribute multiplication over addition § exponentiate (raise to a power) Ø Substitute values for variables v Simplify Numerical & Algebraic Expressions Ø Combine Like Terms Ø Factor Greatest Common Factors (GCF) Ø Cancel Common Factors § reduce to lowest terms Ø Apply the Properties of Exponents § multiply and divide expressions § raise expressions to powers v Solve Linear Equations in 1 Variable: Ø Requiring Several Transformations Ø Having Variables on Both Sides v Work with Linear Equations in 2 Variables Ø Determine Slope, Given § 2 points § the line’s equation § the line’s graph § the line is parallel/perpendicular Ø Determine the Line’s Equation, Given § 2 points § 1 point and slope § the line’s graph § the line is parallel/perpendicular Ø Compute and Intercepts Ø Sketch the Graph v Solve Systems of 2 Linear Equations Using: Ø The Substitution Method Ø The Linear Combination or Elimination Method v Solve Word Problems, Involving: Ø 1 Linear Equation in 1 Variable Ø 2 Linear Equations in 2 Variables v Solve and Graph Linear Inequalities Ø Solve and Graph Inequalities in 1 variable: § Simple Inequalities § Compound Inequalities, expressed as • Conjunctions • Disjunctions Ø Graph Linear Inequalities in 2 Variables v Manipulate Polynomials Ø Add and Subtract Ø Multiply by: § signed real numbers § monomials § binomials Ø Exponentiate (raise to a power) Ø Factor (leading coefficient 1 or not 1): § difference of squares § perfect trinomial squares § quadratic trinomials v Manipulate Rational Expressions Ø Simplify Ø Add and Subtract § Obtain common denominators Ø Multiply and Divide v Manipulate Radical Expressions Ø Simplify Numerical and Algebraic Radicals Ø Add and Subtract Ø Multiply Ø Rationalize Denominators v Solve Non-linear Equations: Ø Quadratic Equations: § by factoring § by the Quadratic Formula Ø Radical Equations Ø Absolute Value Equations Rev: 2/24/2017 EHS Pre-Algebra Proficiency Exam Study Guide Students may not use a calculator and may not use notes on the exam.
