Grade 5 Unit 1 Family Letter: Physical Properties of Matter Dear Fifth Grade Families, Our Focus In our first Science unit, students will learn how matter is classified based on its physical properties including mass, magnetism, physical state, relative density, solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate energy. Instructional Approach Students will learn the importance of classifying matter based on its physical properties in real world situations. Students will learn that mass can be measured. Matter can conduct or insulate thermal and electrical energy. Some objects are soluble in water while others are not. Students will observe relative density by objects or liquids that sink or float. Family Support You can help your child in several ways. ● Point out physical properties such as magnetism, relative density (sink/float), conduct or insulate energy, and solubility, ● Ask your child to classify matter based on its physical properties such as mass, magnetism, physical state (solid, liquid, or gas), density, solubility and its ability to conduct or insulate energy.. ● When discussing together at home, discuss the importance of classifying matter and how matter is used in real world situations ● Discuss how energy is conducted or insulated when cooking at home when using electricity. Sincerely, The Fifth Grade Team
