January 9th Students should be reading at home each evening for at least 15 minutes to help improve comprehension and build vocabulary. African American Biography projects are due February 1st! Students will each need a 4 ounce package of Terra Cotta colored Model Magic for our Greece unit. https://www.michaels.com/c rayola-model-magic4oz/M10602292.html Wish list items needed: Chocolate Lover’s 8 ½ “x 11” cardstock Colored Pencils Elmer’s Spray Adhesive Glue Reading- Students were introduced to problem & solution this week. They worked on reading passages where they had to find the problem and discuss possible solutions and vice versa. We also discussed nonfiction text features which help students when reading passages. We will continue working on these skills this upcoming week. Then we will begin our discussion of main idea and details in fiction passages. Writing- Students worked on their winter grams this past week and also began their 100 year writing piece. This is just a fun writing we do to celebrate the 100th day of school. We will begin our Snow Day writing piece soon. The wish list items are needed to help complete this writing piece if you are able to help out. Math- My math group wrapped up our geometry unit this week. We discussed plane versus solids shapes. We also talked about edges, vertices, and faces on solid shapes. Students will have to identify each of these. Cones, cylinders, and spheres have no straight lines, therefore, there are NO edges, faces, or vertices. The cube and rectangular prism both have 6 faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices. The square pyramid has 5 faces, 8 edges, and 5 vertices. We also discussed the differences between points, rays, lines, line segments, parallel lines, intersecting lines to include perpendicular lines. (intersecting lines that create right angles. Finally we talked about angles: right angles or 90 degree angles, acute angles or less than 90 degree angles, and obtuse angles or greater than 90 degree angles. Students learned about congruent and non-congruent figures and we discussed symmetry in shapes. Test moved to Wednesday, due to holiday. Science- We finished up our simple machines unit, and we will be working on reviewing each machine next week. Test on Friday, January 20th.
