Cell Cycle and Reproductive Strategies FRQ Test
Answers must be in essay form. Outline form is not acceptable. Labeled diagrams may
be used to supplement discussion, but in no case will a diagram alone suffice. It is
important that you read each question completely before you begin to write.
1. Sexual reproduction requires that half of the chromosomes in a zygote come from
one parent and the other half from the second parent.
a. Describe the process by which a germ cell’s complement of chromosomes is halved
in the formation of gametes.
b. Choose ONE organism or group of organisms that reproduce asexually. Describe
the mode of asexual reproduction in that organism and explain the advantages to the
organism of asexual reproduction.
c. Choose ONE organism or group of organisms that reproduce sexually. Describe the
mode of sexual reproduction in that organism and explain the advantages to the
organism of sexual reproduction.
a. The process of Meiosis is when a germ cell’s complement of chromosomes is halved
in the formation of gametes. Meiosis cycle is consisted of Prophase 1, which is where
the sister chromatids inter wire; Metaphase 1Where the tetrads align; Anaphase 1,
Pairs of homologous chromosomes split up; Telophase1, two haploid cells form;
b. Plants reproduces asexually by getting cut and roots will form making that new plant
an exact copy or clone of the parent plant. This has advantages of keeping the same
genes and passing them down from generation to generation and a plant can
produce a lot of identical offspring
c. Darwin's finches are an example of organisms that reproduce sexually. For sexual
reproduction they use both an egg from a female and a sperm form a male, combined
together to form a zygote. Mitosis cycle which is Prophase, duplicated
chromosomes(two sister chromatids); Metaphase where the sister chromatids line up
in the middle; Anaphase, the sister chromatids separate, and finally telophase, where
two complete new daughter cells are produced. Some advantages of sexual
reproduction are the new cells are able to have genetic variation, have evolution, and
be able to undergo natural selection. With sexual reproduction, there is a chance that
the offspring could receive a variety of traits, some that are better fit for the
environment and some that may not make the offspring better fit for the environment.
By reproducing this way, they also have a chance to have random mutations occur,
which allows natural selection to take place, causing the most fit alleles to survive,
allowing that organism to survive and reproduce to pass that trait along, which over
time has created evolution.
